My car was running fine two days ago. Tried to start it last night. It worked, but was extremely cold. I turned on my parking lights when inside to let it warm up as usual. came out. died and won't turn over. decided to deal with it in the daylight next day. connected to friends car and got it started. when removing jumpers the car died. Now i don't want to go buy a battery if that isn't the problem. alternator? Volt met? What you think
Charge the battery. Even if you don't own a battery charger go buy one because every car owner should have one. Also, to check the alternator with no tools take a metal object while car is running and see if it will stick to the back of the alternator as a good alternator produces a magnetic field.
Get the battery.

you will have to check the voltage whith the engine running .should be 13.6 or better

May I suggest that you drive your car to one of the major auto stores and they can and will check your alternator for you to make sure it is good/bad.These places like AutoZone do this all the time. They do not charge for the check out. (Of course they are hoping that if you need a part you will buy it from them.
One other suggestion. If you do need a new alternator, get a rebuilt one. It is cheaper and most always comes with a warranty.
Hope this helps Good luck Loringh PS please take a moment to give me a rating

bad alternator possible or bad battery..even though its new that battery can be bad. I would take a volt meter and with the engine running check the volts of the battery..If the volts are 12 you need to replace alternator, if volts are 14 you need to check the battery. to check the battery hold the volt meter to the battery and have someone start the car..while the starter is cranking battery volts should not drop below 10volts.if they do your battery is bad.

I don't know what your problem is. I would suspect your solenoid as you suggest. It is easy checked with a volt ohm meter and a friend. (voltage always present on the battery side - voltage present on starter side when the key is turned to the start position)
Is this a manual or auto? I guess you know there is a switch on the clutch if it is manual - clutch MUST be depressed to start. Im sure you know this!
Check the solenoid. You could jump the solenoid with a auto grade jumper cable to double check your electric (volt/ohm) check.
