Car start then shut-off immediately

98 Cavalier - The fuel pump is running (can hear fuel pump). I believe it is getting gas (spark plugs smell like it).
When we are able to finally get it to run. Left key in ON position for several minutes and then turned to start. The cluster has random lights turning on/off at random times - thinking it might be the cluster (the guy I bought it from said he just replaced the cluster - he works at a Meinke shop) - any idea how to tell if its the cluster other than going for electronic diagnostic??

    Sounds like the contacts in the ignition lock cylinder for the passlock system are bad.

    No, you need to replace the ignition lock cylinder. It just pops out of the column, but it is kind of expensive. 150 I think. Then after you replace it you will need to reprogram the security system. To do this try to start the car. It will start and die. The security light will flash. Leave the key on for 11 minutes the light will continue to flash. When the light stops flashing start the car.

You need to get the car up on a hoist to inspect the underside and find the cause of the leak. Without a thorough inspection you cannot determine the cause. Most likely you have a fuel line that has corroded and this will leak fuel rapidly when the car is running and the fuel is being pumped under pressure.

It is not legal in many places to run your car with highly flammable fuel leaking as much as it is so you need to get it checked immediately before you get put off the road or you have a fire.

2002 cavalier 2.4 will not start fuel pump runs has spark
FUEL PUMP ONLY HUM'S FOR 2 SECONDS WHEN YOU TURN KEY TO ON, NOT START, POSITION. YOU CANNOT HEAR PUMP RUN WHEN CAR IS RUNNING ! THIS 2 SEC., IS THE PUMP PRIMING ITSELF TO START ENGINE. My 98 Cavalier was runnning great all the sudden every now and again it takes a couple turns to start, so i took it to Auto zone, they ran a test said everything looked good, and that I should change spark...
My guess would be two of the plug wires are on the wrong plugs.
The original problem could be a faulty fuel pump relay or the check valve in the fuel pump.

is it fuel injected if it is one of the fuel injecter pods is probally tore up or ur comourter is bad bc i had a 1993 chevy blazer tht did the same thing and i got a new injecter pod and new computer and it ran fine

Not starting ran out of gas,added gas and still not starting,can hear fuel pump running,smell gas at engine and exhaust.
Gas line filter may be dirty and clogged. Change it. There could be sediment or dirt in the tank that you drew up to the filter when you ran out of gas and it has built up and is blocking gas from getting into the engine.

check to see if you can hear the fuel pump running.just cycle the key to the on position but dont turn over the motor you should hear a humming sound come from the fuel tank.if no sound check your fuses if all ok could be a bad fuel pump
or check to see if you have spark if no spak then it could be the module inside your distributor cap.it also controls the fuel pump.
