I ran out of gas and my car since then has been making strange noises, having trouble going up hill and been jerky to drive. A mechanic (friend of a friend) told me I need to replace one or more spark plugs. I've owned it for 30-40k miles out of 120k so should I just go ahead and replace all of them? What tools will I need? How do I do it?
Remove the sparkplug covers/coils 1 at a time, usually just pull right off with little force, don't take them all off yet, we are working 1 at a time. Use a spark plug socket that fits, I use trial and error till I find one that is snug and don't wobble on the plug. Remove the plug turning counter clockwise, replace plug making sure there is a gap between electrode and plug ground, sometimes they are pressed together, make shure they have a small gap (picture shown) Replace the plugs and tighten them down snug, not real tight, but snug. Replace the plug/cap on the plug and move on the the next plug.
NOTE: plugs have a certain gap they need to be set at, but I never bother, I just make sure they look similar to this:

You aer not clear about your problem, when replacing plugs and wires all the boots need to stay in place, the larger boot goes around the spark plug, making sure the metal is secure around the tip of the plug, the oppisite end fits the distributer cap, making sure the metal at the end of the wire is securely in the hole. You said you have 3 boots, you should boots for each end of each plug wire and a plug wire for each spark plug

wrong transmission fluid type is an obvious solution, also look at the pressure control solenoid. check the filter is installed correctly.
good luck !

Check your timing or could be timing belt out of 1 tooth. This model of corolla does not use lifter.

Sounds like your thinking in the right area. Up on stands or hoist look for ripped boot, and/or movement at joint.

These is because of the improper combustion, so you better check the air filter and the exhaust along with that you replace all the spark plugs
