Sounds like the starter is physically loose or going bad and draging.
If the "dead battery" worked in a different vehicle, then you should look at bad connections at the starter or even the starter itself. There is a lock washer used to connect the battery cable to the starter. If this washer has corroded, it can cause what you describe. Moe

how many miles? have you had the timing checked? is the truck loosing coolant? do you smell any funny smells while trying to start the truck?how do the battery cables look internally? are they green or white inside the insulation if you peel some of it back?
