SOURCE: Sounds like the valves or pistons is knocking

If it is a knocking noise, you could be hearing bearings or pistons. In either case it is internal. The engine would have to come out and be rebuilt. On something like this there is no easy fix or short cut that can be taken.

SOURCE: early morning sounds like knock but goes away 2002

This is common on all 4.6 5.3 6.0 engines. It is carbon build up on the pistons. GM sayes there is no solution for this. It will not hurt the engine. The noise should stop after about 3 minutes of running.

SOURCE: Loud knocking sound

They did not hear the noise or did they not drive the truck ?
It could be something in the brake system too.

2014 F350 diesel 6.7 92,000 mi. Check engine light, suddenly runs very rough when idling and loud engine knocking. Any idea of the cause?

loud knocking can be the timing has gone out so don't drive or start engine till its checked. https://roadmasterengineworld.com/2018/03/timing-gear-caution-on-2011-2016-ford-6-7l-diesel-engines/
loud tapping can be the pistons hitting the valves. engine light could be on because the knock sensor is activated. this will put engine in low rev limp mode to try and limit damage, either way it need looking at to find the fault. other cause can be oil pressure/flow is not correct. or the valves are in need of adjustment. can also be the engine has become out of balance.

Kia optima 2008 car had a knocking noise checked no oil on stick put oil in car still had a loud sound do you think the motor has blown

No you have worn the bearings out and need a rebuild of the crankshaft and probably the cylinders and pistons and at worst the cylinder head due to the pistons hiting it or the valves

Loud knocking

Sort of sounds like the timing belt broke-- if you have one

The valves may have hit the pistons & that is why it won't turn over

I don't know any of that is true & won't wish it on anyone, but
it is a place to start

Loud knocking in engine with white smoke

Hi Tracey P, sounds like you have a TERMINAL problem! If this noise and smoke symptoms came on suddenly while driving, and your performance is impaired, then I would suggest you might well have lost one cylinder dur to component failure. That might be a piston breaking up, a valve dropping or perhaps a combination of the two. I would seriously suggest that it's time to remove the cylinder head/s to check what exactly the problem is.

My 2000 1.6 litre Corolla has a loud knocking from top of engine. Sounds like a valve dropped or seized and maybe hitting piston. The engine has been running well but suffering high oil consumption.

STOP RUNNING THE MOTOR IMMEDIATELY!!! If it has dropped a valve all you are doing is making the damage worse. Take the valve cover off and make sure all of the valve stems are there. If not replace or rebuild the motor.

loud knocking is usually a piston problem[wrist pin-piston-piston rings -rod bent damaged-crank -bearing ]piston hitting valve pull plugs and check for fouling it will narrow down area do compression test but knock usually doesnt last long before engine usually goes south other which u can hope for and can sound like a knock would be the exhaust gasket good luck

Engine noise and fails to start

check your oil. If it is frothy or gray then you have water in it and that means you have a blown head gasket. If there is oil in the radiator then the same holds true.

The nocking could be from a failed oil pump as well. If the oil pump fails then the car will not start. You have to remove the oil pan to replace the pump.

Blew the head gasket and had head resurfaced. Machinist shaved .018 inch off head. Before head gasket blew, car ran great. Now having difficulty starting, started one time and heard loud knocking from...

SOUNDS LIKE THE TOP OF THE PISTONS ARE HITTING THE VALVES. IF YOU HAVE HAD THE HEAD SKIMMED YOU ARE BRINGING THE HEAD .018IN  CLOSER TO THE BLOCK. REALISTICLY YOU SHOULD GET A  THICKER HEAD GASKET OR TRY PUTTING 2 ON. IT SOUNDS EXTREME BUT ENGINES ARE VERY PROCICE AND THESE MOVING PARTS ARE VERY CLOSE TO START OFF WITH.
