I would do the entire rear end being as you don't know what else is going out if the pinion bearing is going, however i would drain the pumpkin take the cover off and with the rear end in the air have someone turn one of the tires and watch for anything incorrect to happen and listen for a noise. There is a chance that it ends up being a wheel bearing or a caliper and that could save you a good deal of money and time.

have you check the rear brakes? If i am not mistaken you have drum brakes in the rear, make sure the auto adjuster didn't come loose.

replace the front u joint. I had the same issue with my truck, and I noticed that the front u joint didn't come stock with a greese zerk, the oem replacement does so they wear out fast. by the time I found it, it still looked ok till I removed the drive shaft....It was very close to wearing through.

Should be on the passenger side kickplate below the glovebox and to the right. You may have to remove the plastic panel to access it or look for a small hole in it and feel around for the button

Truck will only drive in 4wd, no power to rear wheels

I would guess your differential. Raise your rear end and try rotating wheel, it should make the other wheel spin the opposite direction. I'd the other wheel doesn't spin, I would say it's your differential.

I have a 1999 chevy silverado Z71 1500 5.3. It makes loud grinding and poping noises when I put it in gear how do I know if its the transmission or the transfer case?

the transfer case only engages when in 4wd. check the universal joint, it connects from the drive shaft to the rear differential. it may need grease or to be replaced.

Noise in Reverse

Transfer case would only be if you are in 4 wheel drive. this sounds like a rear end or u joint issues. Get under the truck and grab the drive line, if you are able to turn it more then a 1/4 inch each way bad u joints. If not then check the rear end.

Rear end clunk in Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup

The noise is caused by the axle button being worn out, this lets the axle move back and forth and clunk, this is a unique problem with C clip retained axles, it is a noise issue but will not fail and cause any more damage, in order to fix it you must have the axles pulled and the diff carrier checked for excess wear where the axle retainning C clip rides, if the carrier is ok then replace the axles.
