How to replace a idler pulley on a 1997 international 4700 series
Hi Melissa:
Nice truck!
I'm assuming that the bearings in the idler pulley are shot which is why you're replacin the pulley. Pulley's are typically attached by a bolt through their centre. Replacing the idler consists of getting the bolt out and exchanging new for old. Here's the route I would recommend:
SAFETY FIRST - Disconnect negative battery terminal.
- Make a diagram of belt routing.
- Slacken idler and remove belt
- Remove Idler retaing bolt (Watch for washers or spacers)
- Install new Idler with washers or spacers in same position.
- Tighten retaining bolt.
- Use diagram to re-install belt;
- Re-connect negative battery terminal.
- Check for stray tools or loose objects.
Test run.
