I hit a pothole, jeep stalled out. checked all fuses, replaced crank positioning sensor, still wont start.gauges dont go up
No turn?
This procedure usually works:
·Check the battery cable connections:
Make sure the positive cable, makes a good connection at the battery and at the starter. Make sure the negative cable makes a good ground connection at the battery and (preferably) at the engine.
·Check the battery the simple way, like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
·Check the starter and solenoid:
If the wiring looks ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter(10 volts minimum while cranking).
If the starter spins and no crank, the problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear is stuck.
Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck bendix gear.
·Make a simple test of the alternator:
If you can, somehow get the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery. It should be at least 13.6 volts to properly charge the battery.
The fuel cut off emergency switch thingy ,its about a inch square with a red rubber to ,locate it and it down to reset it ,it should be under the bonnet but i cannot remember if this is the correct place or not
Testimonial: "thanks colin, gonna try"
hey colin, jeeps dont have an emergency switch shut off
it cranks but wont turn over
well just shows how much i know ,i do have a handbook somewhere but it is only a haynes ,all vehicles with fuel injection should have one under euroepean regulations and this vehicle was sold extensivly in europe abiet mainly diesel engined variant but theyr are quite a few petrol versions ,iam sure its at the back on the firewall by the brake servo RHD (uk)versions

SOURCE: 2000 jeep cherokee starts then stalls in approx 3 sec 4.0 has new crank sensor
I am going to assume that it will not run even if you push on the accelerator pedal?
Can you install or attach an old timing light to the spark plug wires, turn it one and try to start it. The light should flash with the engine running, but if it shuts off at time of engine die, and the engine is still spinning, you are losing spark, My suggestion is the cranks shaft sensor on bell housing.
Second, install a pressure gage on the test port on the fuel rail and watch it as you start the engine, fuel pressure should not drop as the engine dies, if it does, the pump is not working correctly. There are two modes of power to that pump, one to start and timed, for only a few seconds to prime the system, and one to run continuously. Find the wires going to the pump at the tank. Connect test light to those wires and watch what happens during crank and at stall, You should not have the pump shut off and the engine dies.
If you have spark, and fuel pump working, when did you last change the filter,,but I put that LAST.
It has to be one or the other of these.
Good Luck

wall5552: there were two engines used in 1992 Jeep Wranglers.
A 2.5 liter and a 4.0 liter. HOWEVER>>>> The location for the crank angle sensor is the same for both.
It is located on the bell housing up near the front at about the 10:00 PM position.
The Cam position sensor is located in the Distributor on both engines as well.

Had same promblem with my jeep, you may want to check the
"crankshaft sensor" if its bad jeep wont start.
SOURCE: 2003 Jeep Liberty Stalls
thats correct, may have bad ecm (computer) or bad wire to crank sensor from ecm, also ive run into this problem and it was the new sensor i put in was no good and aftermarket, also cam sensor can do this, and also make sure the 5 volt feed wire is good, good luck hope this helps.
Testimonial: "It ended up being the cam sensor. Thanks for the info. Fixed it right up."
