I went out this morning to my work van to start it and all it does is crank. I pulled the air filter out sprayed some starting fluid in there and then tried again, and all it did was crank. I had this problem one other time about 2 months ago and after a hour or so of trying it finally started. Now this time it isn't starting. I drive it every day prob around 300+ miles a day. Always ran good other then these two times always in the morning. Just had a oil changed 2 days ago. Is there a common problem these vans have? i've heard fuel pump goes in them a lot but the starter fluid this time did nothing so i'm guessing spark?

test and see if you have spark and fuel preasure, you may have bad feul pump, common problem is the fuel pump goes bad, but check before replacing.

How do you know the fuel pump is good? And I would not keep using starting fluid to try and start the vehicle. Did you check fuel pressure? Did you try to dump a little fuel down the carb then try starting?

Have not checked for fuel pressure yet i assumed that the pump may still be good because the van didn't even try to start with the starting fluid. I'm stuck at home for the moment due to no vehicle till my wife gets home.
No stop!! I will tell you your problem
electronic ignition module underneith your distrubutor cap got a electrical plug connectors one on each end 2 screws hold the box in place remove that box gpo to part store and tell them thats what you need its called a electronic ignition module replace that if still nothing then replace cap with new distrubutor cap witch the coil is inside the cap ok if still no start check your firing order make sure you set your sparkplug wires right by following the firing order on the top of the engine intake manifold fireing order will tell you there on the cap spark plug wire number 1 should be facing number 1 cyclinder and the rotar should be facing that number 1 cyclinder with the number 1 cyclinder at top dead center on the compression stroke just put your thumb or a rag on the top of the hole while someone taps key so engine turns slowly over till you feel your thumb or rag pushes with air force off the hole then put screw driver in number 1 spark plug hole and turn engine by hand clock wise by the pullies ok turning toward the driverside ok then the screw driver will come up futher to top take screw driver out check again to make sure your Distrubuor rotor is facing that number 1 cyclinder set cap on make sure number 1 sparkplug wire on the cap is facing the number 1 cyclinder as well put spark plug back in plug wire back on now your firing order on cap starts with number and from that number 1 on your cap ok your firing order goes clockwise from that number 1 on your distrubutor cap clock wise now 1 8 and so on just look up firin gorder on you tube for any chevy v8 engine ok the firing order is quite simple on the cap now try starting it and then if it starts great if not again then timing chain is shot then you will have to replace your timing chain well hope i have been of help to you please let me know how this helped by replying back to me here [email protected]
you can check the timing chain by rotating engine back in forth you will hear a metal clang or slaping in the front of the engine ok
but its best to replace it later on anyways there only supposed to be good up to a 100 thousand miles ok so that would be your last resort if none other works that i decribes before this ok well please let me know how this all works out for you by replying back to me at [email protected]
