I'm looking at buying a '87 Suzuki Samurai. The only mechanical issue with it is that the rear main seal is leaking (according to the seller). How difficult is this to replace? Would I have to pull the engine and transmission?
Is it a 4x4 if it is you would have to seperate the tranny from transfer case and drive shaft tp change out seal.If not just drop the drive shaft and replace seal.We are talking about the rear seal at the end of the tranny.
The samurai runs a divorced transfer so the only thing to remove from the back of the gearbox is the jack shaft (short drive shaft) between the two. You will then need to remove the gearbox, clutch and flywheel to get to the rear main. This can all be done with the engine in. I believe the rear main seal he is referring to is the seal on the back of the crankshaft, not the seal at the back of the tranny.
