My heater core on my wife's 2001 Suburban is out and I need to bypass it until I can get it fixed. It has two metal hoses that connect to the two rubber hoses near the firewall- do I just need to loop the two rubber hoses, or disconnect from the firewall so that all of the hoses are looped?

The following suggestion is as old as the water cooled engine but it still works better than any solution you can buy at an auto parts store.
Total cost: $2.00
If that didn't do the job, you are going to have it boiled out at your local radiator shop. The cost will be approx. $30.

yeah hose and clamps are the cheap easy way to go there, or if your lucky, the leak is right at the spot where the hose meets the metal and you can just cut the end off and put it back with the old clamp

Yes it can be done. look at your engine on it there will be two heater hoses coming from the engine to the heater, disconnect those two heater hoses at engine, with heater hose and two hose clamps, get the hose and clamp first at auto parts, install one end and the other end of same hose, where you disconnected the heater hoses from the engine, you have just by-pass the heater, hope this was very helpful.

if your rubber hoses are cracked and leaking then replace the hoses with proper size and length.
if the hoses are leaking where they connect to the metal fittings from the heater core then try and tighten up the hose clamps -- they could just be loose.
