I just bought a 1988 Subaru DL with 198,000 miles. I was wondering what grade of oil you would recommend. I don't have much history on the car so I don't know what the owners in the past have used. I think the most recent owner used a 5W-30. Thanks.

Does seem odd, never heard of Subaru having that odd habit.
I would have thought your dealer would have checked but if not have them or someone check the charging system output.
You may be better to list a problem using the premium email method vs. chat. This way we can upload diagrams and procedures. With chat we are not able to upload. It seems this issue may require some diagnostics that will require some time. Just a thought.
Well lucky for you there is a lemon law. Bring the car in for the state inspection, Request for them to be thorough, explain that you just bought it. The past owner is responsible for the repairs. If not, get reimbursed. I'm not sure what trani fluid it takes but call the dealer for that. The noise from the front end, the grinding could be anything, check the wheel bearings, steering components, rust on rotors, backing plates, and related items. The trany noise could be nothing or it could be clutch pedal linkage, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, or clutch asembily. It would need to be inspected to see if anything applies.
check those front hub bearings ...gotta pull the axle out and the brakes apart...there is a pair of roller bearings inside the hub which the outside cv axle rides on..do get the axle nut back to 160 foot lb with the washers in place
Ceryl, I would use the 20W50 oil only if the car is using oil. A lighter grade is better in most instances as the engine warms up faster - very important - and usually gets better gas mileage. Use a premium synthetic such as Mobil 1, or the Castrol brand. I would use 10W30 oil but it is best to always check your owner's manual for their recommendation.
