Question about 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD
Hello, I have a 1998 Dodge Ram, 5.2 4x4, 46RE trans, only 78k mi. I was experiencing an issue where after I drove the truck approx. 20 mi. it would not shift out of 1st gear. I replaced the governor pressure sensor and switch with the help of a former Chrysler certified mechanic. This fixed the initial issue, but now I am having the issue mentioned in this thread. After driving about 20 mi. the OD kicks out and trans temp light comes on. I removed the check valve on the cooler line, as I have heard that it gets plugged easily, no change to my issue.... Any insight?

your trans cooler is restricted. most likely it is part of your radiator and if it is restricted you will either need to replace the radiator or install an aftermarket cooler. have your trans cooler flow checked and go from there

Have you replaced the transmission filter and fluid yet,
if your transmission works ok until it heats up,your transmission external cooler may be plugging up getting the transmission fluid to hot and not cooling it at all.It is located in front of your A/C and radiator.you can replace it with an after market one or have it flushed.
and you might want to put in an additive for the transmission made my Lucas.
