The AC switches on my 1999 Chevrolet Malibu switch automatically, from AC on to AC off and from recirc to outside air intake. It is not constant but does happen frequently enough to be a problem.

I just got my Focus back from service due to recirc button kept switching off everytime... ASNWER IS: PERFECTLY NORMAL, every new Ford is like that, the recirc button will be switched off automatically according to the following conditions:
1) Press MAX-AC round button, will activate RECIRC button FOREVER!!!! but you will b freezing to death FOREVER too.
2) All other situation, the RECIRC will be switched off automatically after ON for 30 min.
{: ) Just let it be as this behavior is part of normal operation. Observe for a while. Check again your mode settings, should not be in defrost or defog mode when recirc is requested. The recirc function is available only in face or bi-level mode.
If the recirculation switch is pressed into the ON position when the mode switch is in an unavailable mode position, then the recirculation switch LED will flash 3 times. If the HVAC control module detects a fault with the recirc door the HVAC control module will try to drive the actuator for a predetermined amount of time, to outside air, which is the defaulted position for the recirculation actuator.
Try settling on the face and bi-level mode. You can manually turn on or off the recirc function and observe some air change on the vents. When recirc is off (light off) outside air will also enter and it will mix with the cold air inside if your a/c is on.
The HVAC system also monitors the inside and outside temperature sensors and uses these inputs to control the opening or closing of the recirculation door. If the outside temp is colder, it may not allow recirc off, sometimes it may not even allow a/c function. You may also have a sticking door or failing actuator. If any of the approaches above doesn't come out well, you may proceed for a scan tool diagnostic test to be sure, if your HVAC system does have a trouble.
Shut off the switches so that the auto and recirc lights are both out. If you use recirc in winter your car will remain fogged up.If you have NAV, go into the climate control touch screen and shut off the ac or auto mode there as well.
If the vehicle is equipt with an ambient air temperature display, the sensor also prevents the AC clutch from engaging if the outside air is below as certain tempreture. To test, turn the AC on. Press and hold the AC button at the same time as you press and hold the recirculate button. Hold for 5 to 8 seconds. If this is the cause of the issue, the AC will kick on and you will hear the compressor clutch engage. This should also reset the sensor and correct the issue.
I had the same problem with my 2001 Malibu and solved it when a lady "T" boned my wife and I and totaled the car. The solution was a replacement used 2005 Malibu. The only problem now is that I can't turn my head and my wife gets panic attacks when we drive...but at least we are nice an cool!
If I understand correctly the A/C light goes on and off. If so, try to gently push the switch to the side(Not in) while the A/C is on. If this keeps the system working, you need a new control assy(Complete control head)
The A/C pressure switch is located in the high pressure line (the skinny one) on the passenger side of the engine compartment just under the fuse/relay box. The switch has three functions: <28 psi, the switch opens to protect the compressor from lack of lubrication. >220 psi, the switch shifts the radiator and compressor fan to high speed. >455 psi, the switch opens to protect the compressor seals. Check to see if you have any powertrain DTC's first. A faulty engine coolant temp sensor can cause problems with the compressor clutch relay. If the radiator and compressor fan come on with the A/C on but the compressor clutch does not operate, check the compressor clutch relay. You can also obtain Heater control panel diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) by turning the ignition switch on. Then turn fan switch off. Press recirc button to select recirc air. Press and hold recirc to turn off recirc air but this time continue to hold the button down until recirc light comes on for two seconds and then goes off. If there is any trouble, the recirc light will then blink a code (if no trouble, the light will remain off) 1 blink = problem in air mix control motor circuit. 2 blinks = a problem in mode control motor circuit. 3 blinks = a problem in evaporator temperature sensor circuit. (this one could be a factor in your case) Turn the ignition switch off to end the test.
