2000 sebring conv 2.5, v-6- Wont stop backfiring out of the tailpipe, its not loud or big backfires, but its every 2 to 3 seconds, over and over and over. I changed plugs, new fuel pump, have 49psi at fuel rail. Sits there and does for as long as you want to let it.
Sounds like the timing belt has jumped a tooth or two and is causing pre- ignition in the combustion chamber of the cylinder head. Have timing belt alignment marks checked.
Thanks! I think youre exactly right as i've done EVERYTHING but thew timing belt. And I mean everything. Crank sensor, distributor, plugs, wires, o2's, TPS, ECT and the other 2 sensors on the top of the motor. I installed new fuel pump as there was only 22 psi. (now its at 49psi) I mean everything. Theres something I'm sure I forgot here that I've done. And nothing has fixed this little backfire every 2 secs, just back to back to back to back, pooof, poooof, poooof like a cough type thing from the tailpipe. So, I guess its timing belt/water pump at this point. I sure hope that does it. Thanks a lot.
Your welcome. Let me know if that fixed ya.

SOURCE: my car backfires and will not start.
check the fireing order of your plug wires u most likeley crossed a few wires and put them in the wrong order if u r looking at the front of the vehicle the front 3 cylenders are 2,4,6 starting from the front of the moter and the back 3 cylenders are 1,3,5 and the coil packs should be marked as to wich cylendr they go to if not the startin with the top coil pack the top plug wire pin is num1 and the second is num4 the next coil pack is 5 being the top pin and 2 being the bottem pin on the coil and the last coil pack is top pin cylender 3 and bottem is cylender 6. hope this helps
