I've got a jeep grand cherokee 1995 limited and we just got a jeep grand cherokee 1995 limited v8 which the transmission is slipping. Can I put the transmission from the straight 6 into the v8 jeep?
No sir they will not interchange. i worked at a transmission shop for 7 years. the inline 6 has a 500 trans in it and the v8 has a 518 trans in it. the bellhousings are different.
Thank you Mark! Dang. That was a $2500 transmission I was hoping to put in the v8. Is the bell housing the only part that won't fit?
The bell-housing is the only part that wont fit. It will not interchange to a v8. The front pump is smaller causing it to not pump the right amount of fluid through the trans which will burn it up. The clutch packs are built smaller for less torque and horsepower than the v8. The planetary gears are smaller and the valve body is smaller, therefore creating more trouble than its worth. sorry.

If you still have a cap rotor and ignition wires, it's inside the distributor. If not, it is the part where the distributor used to be (center rear of the engine behind the intake manifold)

Depending on how many miles you have on it. You may need to have some repairs done. I don't know if there is much you can do to a jeep after it starts slipping other than try and change the fluid. The rebuild is the best option for you for sure. But you could put some no slip transmission fluid additives in it. Go to a parts store if you think thats your best option and tell them whats wrong and they will hook you up with some good additives. Go to Advance Auto or Auto Zone. The rebuild will be less expensive if the transmission still functions. Around $1000 versus the non functioning transmission that would cost about $1400-$2000. New transmission cost a lot more.

Assume since you say filter it is automatic.
Before starting the job obtain the fluid and filter for your vehicle. The parts store can provide you the right kind and amount of fluid based on Make Year Model. Also obtain new gasket.
Transmission must be cool.
Raise vehicle on jack stands.
Locate the fluid pan. Remove the side and front bolts.
Place a drain pan under the transmission capable of holding 8 quarts (two gallons).
Loosen the rear pan mounting bolts. Fluid should start to drain around the pan at the front. If not the pan is stuck. Pry it gently at the front with a flexible putty knife.
Once fluid is draining you can eventually take the rear bolts all the way out and pour off the balance of fluid.
Clean the gasket mounting surface on the transmission.
Clean the fluid pan completely.
Remove the old filter. It will be held with screws (bolts).
Install new filter.
Assure surfaces are still clean. Put new gasket in place, and install pan, tightening the bolts (screws) gradually until correct torque for your transmission is reached.
Take car off jack stands.
Add the correct amount of fluid for your vehicle through the filler tube. (Parts store can look this up when you are there).
Start with engine in park. Maintain idle, don't race engine.
Shift to each range setting, and then back to neutral.
Watch for leaks - if occur will need to repeat the procedure but the filter can be left in place.
