Check the fuse for the brakes or you might have a worn contact inside the brake switch. In that case, just replace the brake switch. It is located at the upper part of the brake lever.

The switch u are looking for is right above your brake pedal its a black box with a cotter pin in the right side of the unit this brake switch runs your brake lights it's bad go to your local autozone or parts store and tell them u need a brake switch there about 30 bucks u can fix this yourself it's a 5 min job don't pay to get it put in that would b foolish regards Chris
sounds like a bulb is not seated properly in a socket in the back..check all the lights and groundwires too..starting with all the 4way flashers..then running lights.
on your brake pedal yuo have a switch to turn off the brake lights when not in use and when depressed turns on yuor brake lights. i would suggest either trying to adjust them on the pedal and if not replace the switch.
I'm assuming you're talking about an automatic transmission. When you press on the brake pedal, you engage a switch under the pedal which turns your brake lights on, and also engages a solenoid in the shifter which allows you to shift the car out of Park.
That said, are your brake lights working? If your brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal, chances are the shifter solenoid/actuator is broken. If your brake lights DO NOT come on when you press the brake pedal, chances are you have a faulty brake light switch.
Regardless which part is to blame, these are pretty simple and inexpensive repairs.

If your brake lights are lighting when you press the brake pedal then your gear shifter lock solenoid could be bad and need replacing. If your brake lights do not light up when you press the brake pedal, then your stop/brake fuse is probably blown.
you may have to change the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal stop by your local GM dealership in the parts department and they be able to print you off pictures and diagrams but check on the part at your local part store because it maybe cheaper wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.
I think your brake light switch is defective or needs an adjustment. The brake pedal is not making a connection to the brake light switch the brake lights will not brighten when you hit your brakes. If you are going to fix it yourself feel free to contact me and I will guide you through the repair.
