I can get power th the fuel pump when i run a hard wire from the battery to the relay but when i put the relay back in no power to the fuel pump

    the thing is i dont hear the fuel pump at all unless i run a hard wire from the battery to the relay other wise no sound at all from the fuel pump not even for one second

    well thanks anyway your the only to try to stick with me it will go to the shop in a couple of days and they will figure it out and i will not be happy after all the work ive done im a pretty tuff woman but this one has got me baffled

    Have you tried replacing the relay? sometimes the same realy is used for the lights and air conditioning. you can swap only for verifying if the relay is bad. Let me know

I have a question. Turn the ignition on you should hear the pump for about 3 seconds. then it should stop. this is normal operation. then when a signal is sent to the ignition that you are going to crank it then it switches on. I can see how this can seem like the pump is not working but after you crank it you should be able to hear the pump for about 1-1.5 seconds after the crank then it will stop. The pump will not turn on until it is told to do so by the computer.

    your troubleshooting is very good. I know you are wondering if the socket for the relay may be bad. everything is pointing to this or the connection from the fuse box maybe in question. I do not have have the haynes manual for your vehicle but I am sure you are on the right track my friend. Does the fuel relay socket pull out of its mount. can you use a multimeter to check the voltage at the mount

    do you think it maybe not being told to turn on...Hummm. I think we can solve this especially since you seem very mechanically savvy. Lets see .... try this. When you rturn the acc on does the engine even crank?

    This is not a relay issue. The fuel pump relay is not being told to turn on. lets try something...Have you disconected your battery power? lets try to reboot the computer this way. you will have to wait for about 3 minutes after you remove the cable as to allow all power to drain out of the computer capasitors.

    ok... no check engine light? ummm nuetral position switch on the tranny. wait wait wait... Do you have have a PCM or a CCM



    It maybe the PCM power relay. The toughest part is finding out where the thing is located. Be warned this is different from PCM relay that is in the fuse box. On 3.8L engine, PCM power relay is located below the air filter box sometimes. Other models have it between the battery and fender. It is screwed on with four star shaped screws which separate the unit into two things; one side has some gears and coils, the other side has computer circuit. The one with the computer circuit is the PCM power relay. pick it up at a junk yard for $12. it maybe alot more expensive new.

    it might be called CCRM (Constant Control Relay Module), and it looks different than the newer one. In my experience a simple way to diagnose this issue. When you turn the ignition to ON position (without turning the starter,) "Service Engine Soon" light should illuminate. If that is in fact the case and the car doesnt start, there is something wrong with the fuel pump.

    If "Service Engine Soon" light doesnt come on, but all other panel lights come on, then PCM isnt sending power, and most likely PCM power relay is the problem.

    lets see if the service engine soon light stays on. I think there is a procedure that we can do without using the diag tester. not unless you have one.

    camshaft sensor or the crankshaft sensor. The only thing is that when the crankshaft sensor goes bad it normally will take out the camshaft sensor. This is one part I would not suggest from the junkyard. you have troubleshot this thing to death my friend. if the crank is not sending the signal to the computer it is not going to let the fuel turn on.

    I thought about this lastnight. The inertia fuel shut-off (IFS). This is the emergency fuel cutoff switch the one that you reset. do you think this maybe bad?



    I feel bad because I know you could probably repair it yourself and save the money

I have an 03 lesabre. Only 5 volts at the fuel pump connectors but 12 volts at the relay.

It sounds like you have done some troubleshooting on your own and have determined that there is a problem with the power wire to the fuel pump. Running a new wire from the fuel pump power wire to the relay is a good solution if the original wire is damaged or burnt out.
Before connecting the new wire to the relay, it is a good idea to test the fuel pump by running a wire from the battery positive terminal to the fuel pump power wire. This will ensure that the fuel pump is working properly.

I suspect the fuel pump circuit is drawing to much power. Do you have something else hooked into those wires(Audio equip?) The fuse is there to protect the relay. Have you put a bigger fuse (bigger number) in there to keep it from blowing the fuse? If not I suspect a bad fuel pump or a stuck fuel pressure regulator(Causing the pump to work too hard- drawing more electrical power) Just remember, its hard to put the smoke back in once it catches fire.

Angel, is the wire from the relay to the pump in the tank a gray wire? If this is a GM car or truck, the pump wire is almost always gray. So if you are testing if the pump works with putting battery voltage there at the relay, you would put the jumper wire into the terminal with the gray wire. If you look at the relay, there is etched on a side of it the relay explanation of the terminals. The power side is usually designated terminals 30 and 87-one is the power feed to the relay, and the 87 numbered terminal is usually the power out to the fuel pump. The other two terminals form the coil side of the relay- see the little coiled wire designation on the relay schematic? this is the signal side or coil side of the relay, don't put battery voltage into this side- you could fry the computer. If your relay has one other terminal, designated 87A, this is a test terminal for the fuel pump. A single wire connector is in the engine bay somewhere for a tech to hook up battery voltage to test the fuel pump circuit from the relay to the pump. You are doing the same thing with your jumper wire.

Help... I have a 92 350 chevy truck that will not start. I have replace the ECM, coil, ignition mod., the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump. When i turn th Ignition switch on th fuel pump doesnt come on....

You said you jumped the wires for the pump? Was that at the pump relay?
If you have a voltmeter or test light, keep the jumper wire in place and check for voltage at the fuel tank connector. The pump wire will be gray. With relay out and jumpered there, you should have battery voltage at the fuel tank connector. The key doesn't even have to be on, cause the relay has voltage to it at all times. If you jumpered it right (terminals 87 and 30 on the relay), and no voltage at the tank connector, you have a broken fuel wire somewhere between the relay and the fuel tank.
If you do have voltage at the tank, but the pump still won't work, only two possibilities, a bad pump or the ground for the pump is lost. Check the pump ground first.

You Will Need

Get 15 ft 10 gauge wire, 3 ft 14 gauge wire, and a Bosch 4 or 5
prong 30 amp relay. Any place that installs car alarms should have a Bosch
relay. Get a heavy 10/12 gauge wire 30 amp fuse holder. They can be found at
auto parts stores and come in the old glass or new plastic spade type fuses.
Make sure it is heavy wire and not like most that use like 14/16 gauge wire. You
will need 2-10 gauge butt connectors, 1-10 to 16 gauge butt connector, 2-10
gauge female spade connectors, 2-14 gauge female spade connectors, 1-10 gauge
and 1-14 gauge ring connector. Soldering gun, wire
protector.

Procedure



  1. Disconnect battery. Put a ring connector on one end of the 10
    gauge fuse wire and attach that to the post at the rear of the alternator. Run
    it over to the front of the drivers side valve cover and attach to a piece of
    ten gauge wire that you will run to the back of the car. I put mine inside the
    car and it was actually easier.



  2. Run it through the hole next to the powermaster where all the
    wires go through the firewall. I routed it over behind the emer brake pedal,
    down behind that kick panel, took off the sill plate and put it inside the
    plastic wire protector (it does come open, just a pain to figure it out). Take
    out back seat and run it from sill up to opening that goes into the trunk. There
    are other wires that do the same thing, just follow them. Bring wire down to the
    hinge support. There is already a hole right there to put a bolt and nut through
    to mount the relay. I had a radioshack relay but it broke so I got a
    Bosch
    and it seems a lot sturdier. Good choice.

  3. Just a word of caution. Follow the wires down to the side of the
    trunk floor. The copper colored wire is the one to attach the trigger wire to.
    It looks like bare copper wire but is actually coated. The coating is so hard, a
    regular scotch lock wouldn\'t make contack on mine, so I cut out a half inch
    section of the insulation and soldered the trigger wire (a small piece of 14
    gauge from the relay prong 86) to there. I wrapped it in tape and put corrugated
    wire guard over it.



  4. The ground wire from the relay (a small piece of 14 gauge from
    prong 85) can go to the bolt hole you use to mount it to the hinge support. Just
    clean off the paint first. Then hook up the 10 gauge wire from the alternator to
    post 30 on the relay. The remaining prong on a 4 prong relay is the "Power Out"
    that will feed the alternator voltage to the pump(s). If you have a 5 prong
    relay the two remaining prongs should be labeled 87 and 87a. One is the "Power
    Out" when relay is energized, the other supplies power when the relay is not
    energized. Use a test light to determine.



  5. Run the remaining heavy gauge wire from the "Power Out" prong
    (when energized) from the relay through the rear of the trunk to the fuel pump.
    Notice the plastic cover over the BIG rubber grommet that takes all those other
    wires from the trunk out under the back of the car? Forget about getting your
    new ten gauge wire through there. Just drill a hole big enough to run the wire
    through covered with some corrugated protector. I put mine right next to the
    rubber plug. Then run the ten gauge wire to the pump.



  6. The 3 wires going to the sender/pump are Black-Ground,
    Pink-Fuel Level Sender, and Brown/White Stripe-Fuel Pump motor. Cut the
    Brown/White stripe wire after the connector on the fuel pump side and attach the
    new ten gauge wire. Leave enough to reconnect stock later if desired. Put a butt
    connector on the old cut wire so it doesn\'t short on anything. I wire tied stuff
    up neat and used wire protector. If you have an external pump, you can run
    another piece of 10 gauge to it for power from where it splices into the
    original pump wire.



  7. Now the wire coming through the firewall goes over behind the
    drivers valve cover and along the back edge of it under the EGR tubing in wire
    protector and splices into the other fuse wire from the
    alternator.



  8. When you turn on the ignition, you should hear the fuel pump
    prime. The only problem I had was in the connection of the trigger wire to that
    copper colored wire in the trunk like I mentioned above.

Hope this isn\'t confusing. I did it this way to keep things neat
in the engine compartment.

Just brought 2000 chevrolet venture van have fuel pump isseu but not pump i checked fuse box someone have a small black wire connected to fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay that blow so i replace both...

It's possible someone used the jumper wire to load side of fuel pump relay, gray wire. That supplies voltage to fuel pump motor, the fuel pump fuse is hot all the time. The fuel pump will run all the time even with key off, running down the battery. They used the jumper because of some kind of problem. Can you unplug the relay and check relay terminals, where the relay plugs in. Use a test light, either a problem on the load or control side of relay. Are the relay terminals numbered, like 30 and 87, maybe 85 and 86 also?

95 Buick LeSabre 3.8 L which is the fuel pump relay?

You can usually go by the wire colors. The fuel pump relay wires are pink, gray, black, and green with a white stripe. When troubleshooting a fuel pump that is not coming on, the relay is the best place to figure out why. You can pull the relay out and put a jumper wire from the battery to the terminal with the gray wire. If the pump runs, you know that isn't the problem. Then turn the key on and use a jumper between the terminals with the pink and gray wires. If this turns the pump on, you know the ignition switch is sending power to the relay, and the fuse is good. Pull that jumper out, but leave the key on. Push the relay back into the socket, but put a jumper from a ground point to the terminal with the black wire. If that turns the pump on, the ground wire is bad. If not, the PCM is not turning the relay on. Reasons for that may be a bad wire from the PCM, a passlock issue, or the PCM fuse/power wire.

I have a 1996 yukon 4 door it wont start thought it was the pump becuase i didn't here it dropped the tank and checked it by running wires to it and it works checked the wires and there is no power spayed...

You did that the hard way
If you had a wiring diagram,you could have started anywhere in the fuel system,checking as you went,until you had no voltage drop.
You could also have found a place, to put power to the pump, without removing the tank
There is a fuse,relay in most cases,fuel pressure regulator,etc in all vehicles. Have to know where and what to test.
Your working blind with no print of a system, your not knowlegable of.

Fuel pump will not run, 96 Neon 2.0 SOHC

Personally I wouldnt bother tracing the wire as it is probably not worth your time, and just run a constant 12v from the battery to the relay on like 10ga wire. There is probably a short somewhere in the system which can be a real headache to find.

Also it may sound dumb, but check your fuses, and the fusible links under the hood. Chances are that they are all fine though, especially if you have dash lights.
