The read end of my 2005 Dodge Ram Diesel is emitting a squeaking noise, but primarily when in reverse. It has become quite loud and annoying in reverse, but can barely hear it in drive. U-joint wouldn't be different volumes in drive versus reverse? Any suggestions of cause and or repair.
Noise is coming from a dry u-joint and or the carrier bearing if equiped. Usually a u-joint "cherps" in reverse first then only gets worse with time. If it starts vibrating at highway speeds replace them immediately.

only coasting,

see, that takes a skilled mech to do all that and 10x more. to find
the SOURCE of said noise.
Check the rear driveshaft u-joints. Most likely the rear u-joint at the differential is seized/seizing. May here a rotational squeaking at low speeds. If you want to check it yourself. Remove the rear driveshaft and move the u-joint in each direction and check for tightness. Do so with both ends. Let me know how it works out for ya!
Just about any moving part will do this if they become worn or void of lubrication or built up with rust. Ball joints, tie rod ends, stabilizer links, shock mounts being the most common. Sometimes hard to tell which one is making the noise as sound travels so quickly through a solid. I use a stethoscope or a headset with a microphone to help determine areas but even with these tools can be deceptive.
Hello mibparker: If you are sure the brakes are not the source of the problem? I would check a few other things. If the sound is from the front end area. Look at the backing plates on the front rotor area. Make sure they are not touching the rotors. If the noise is from under the truck i would look close at the drive line u-joints. If the are bad they can vibrate or they will squeak or even tweet. This will increase and decrease wit speed of the truck.

Classic symptom of dry universal joints. Once they start to pop and squeak you can't just grease them you need to replace them. You'll need to drop the driveshaft to know for sure.
i have the same noise to my 2005 ford f-150 i beleive its a frozen bearing in the universal
