Ford Explorer back hatch door/window latches broken

This rear door (hatch) has a window that swings up and then the bottom half of the door swings down. BOTH locking mechanisms are now unworkable. The only way I could open the bottom half was to squeeze my hand inbetween the door and the liner and mess around with the lock inside. Now the window won't latch at all either. What to do?!?!?!?

SOURCE: my back hatch door doen't want to open

i have had the same problem many times with my mercury villager. one thing i have found to work on more than one occasion is while it is closed, push the back hatch as if you were shutting it. hit the lock button ( either on remote or inside of van ). then push the handle out on the hatch to make sure it will catch all the way. unlock the doors and pull on the handle, the hatch should open with no problem.

SOURCE: how to unlock a broken ford windstar rear door

You will need to remove the hatch panel, and release it manually. It is a pain in the **** with the hatch closed, but it can be done.

SOURCE: The rear latch/handle on our

Here's how I repaired mine. Go inside and remove the plastic 2" square plastic cover. By pushing on the lever inside this area, the latch will release. Push on the door at the same time, when the latch is pushed. With the door open, remove all four screws from the plastic panel. Now pry carefully the big plastic panel off the door. There are plastic snaps holding this on, all around the edges. Now there is another metal cover over the latch mechanism under this panel. Remove this. You now can see into the latch area and put the handle back into the slot where it came out of. You'll see that the ends of the handle can be put back on the round bar, but to hold them in place, I attached 2 nylon ties on one end. You can also purchase a metal push on retainer from the local hardware store. Mine has been repaired for 8 months and had no trouble. Ford used no retainer on these handles and after prolonged use, they bend and the handle can be pulled off. A twenty minute job. Your wife can even do it.

Back window is stuck

First be sure the auto-lock is not on and that the entire liftgate can be opened.

Look for the small rubber button above and on the right side of the license plate. Try pushing that button to see if the rear window hatch pops.

If these efforts don't work, check the fuse associated with the "luggage compartment lid release switch"... it's a 20 amp fuse possibly located in slot 22.

A last resort would be removing the interior panel of the liftgate and locating the latch release for the hatch. You can find a schematic of the rear liftgate in an Internet search. Good luck!

Will a 1994 ford explorer rear hatch fit on a 1995 ford explorer?

Unfortunately no, the 1994 Ford Explorer hood latch will not fit on a 1995 model. You need to find a latch from between the years of 1995 - 97.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My door ajar light will not go off in my 1997 ford explorer we believe it to be the back hatch

inside each door and the hatch are one micro switch that twists into the latch, there are two for the rear hatch, the switch that is bad can be any of the 6 switches, Ford can scan the systems body control computer and see which switch is the problem, this is a big problem with all late model fords, the switch is cheap the labor kills u.

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport and I can't open the rear door. How do I acess the latch mechanism? The latch works when I apply pressure but nothing happens. The electric locks seem ok.

You will need to remove the panel from the inside of the rear door and then you will have access to the latch and assemblies in side the rear hatch.
