My friend 1997 Convertible BMW coupe,Soft top Storage or lid wont open(it is not electrical), If we pull the lid handle we can hear a click from the latch and that's all. we checked the trunk and no access from there, we lifted the rear seat and nothing there to help, no idea how to take the back seat, and if we do is there any access to the latch. Any one can help with this issue. Thanks a lot

Hi, I don`t know the car but sometimes when you can`t open a boot lid someone need to push the boot lid down ( this relase the pressure of the latch system)and the same time someone pull the handle. Hope that helps.

If your top is electric then you will need to release the front cowl motors at the center point of the trim in front of the rear view mirror(small access plug needs to be removed and allen key inserted to drive unit.) You also need to pull the release handle under the back seat bottom(driver's side) The release handle detaches the drive units for the storage lid cover and the convertible top drive. Once the motors are released, the front of the top must be lifted approximately 6 inches and the pressure against the rear of the top will relax. raise the rear bow, open the storage lid, lower the rear bow and push the front of the top up and toward the back of the car. The top should fold into the storage area. Once in, close the storage lid until it clicks.

1997 328i convertable. The lever was pulled under the left rear seat. Now the top will not work, light is blinking. I checked all fuses, assured motors are back in place and the light is still on, not working at all, what am I missing?
First of all the roof is not even soppose to operate while the trunk is open - So there is the first problem Ive been involved with BMW's for a long time and this is the first Ive heard of a roof opening while the trunk is open. There is a built in feature that tells the car not to open the roof if the trunk is open and the other way roung while the roog lid is open the trunk cant open.
The reason the roof is not working anymore as soon as there is stress on the roof the electric motors(One operates the roof and the other operates the roof lid) disengages, You said that the roof still worked but the lid did not so probably only the one motor disengaged. So what you have to do is open the trunk on the left hand side right behind the tail light pull away the material and simply just push the electric motor into place. that should fix your problem.
It may happen that the two motors have become out of sync, Disengage both electric motors manualy put the roof away engage the motors and that should put the roof and lid back into sync.
I just bought a 1996 328iC (the "C" is for convertible). I bought the car with the knowledge that the roof needed a motor replacement (~$300 for the part alone + ~1-2 hours labor) and that I would need to open and close the roof manually if I wanted to take advantage of the convertible part of the car.
After some trial and error, I figured it out and now it takes me <30 seconds to open or close the top (manually). Note: my top is a semi-electric roof, which I think is what came on the 328iC, you have to lock into place after you close it.
Here's what you do: 1- open all of the windows 2- unlock the roof by turning the latch between the sun visors. 3- push the front of the roof towards the rear of the car - be sure to push in the middle of the roof, where the latch is. 4- lift the back of the roof up off of the roof storage compartment 5- while holding the back of the of the roof up, lift up the roof storage compartment door 6- let go of the back of the roof so that it drops right into the storage compartment 7- push the rest of the roof into the storage compartment 8- close the storage compartment door.
To close the roof, follow the steps above in reverse order. Remember: this is a German car, so you use a little bit (or a lot) of force and you won't hurt it (I think it actually likes it ;-D ).
The problem is that your roof(SOFT TOP) lid isnt closing properly. If you open the roof lid you see there is a button on one of the latches that tells the car that the roof is securely closed if your roof lid is not secure the trunk wont open. To test this press down on the roof lid and the try to open the trunk.
