Two weeks ago our Kia Spectra's lights started coming back on, randomly, on their own. Most recently (1/8/14), a security guard at our daughter's college saw them come on while he was patrolling the parking lot at 4:00 am. He stated that he had passed by the car at 3:45 am and the lights were off and when he went by the car again, he saw them come on. He saw that no one was in the car so, he had the dorm RA wake up our daughter so she could turn off the lights. Why is this happening?
Answering this 2014 question in case some else has this problem. Most likely the relay is malfuntioning and needs to be replaced. The relay is located in the engine compartment behind the battery. Use your owners manual for addition information if you can no longer read the diagram under the cover. If you dont have your manual, you can DL free here 2009 KIA Spectra Owner Manual 291 pages

I have a 2003 Kia and mine did this same thing. They replaced some switch in the brake and gear shifter. It hasn't had a problem since.

I had the same problem with my kia and they just fixed it. It was a bad switch.
SOURCE: Cannot remove the ignition key
check the linkage on the transmission from the shifter. or not try wiggling the key up and down. if the cable is broken try to move the linkage on the trans all the way foward ( towards the front tires) with the tires blocked because it may roll. try it then.
