To check for leak in evaporator,charge the system fully,with green neon dye,and use the glasses made for that.Let the ac run a good bit ,and condensation is leaking from the evaporator case,and look for the dye in the condensation.
You don't. It would require disconnecting hoses and it is illegal to vent freon to the atmosphere. 2500 dollar fine illegal. It takes special equipment to capture the freon. Sorry. That 2500 is more of a reward to ANYONE that reports illegal venting, So take it to a shop and have them evacuate the system fitsy, then pull the compressor if you want. Honestly, let the shop doit.
