Could be the switch, blower resistor, blower motor, or a bad connection in the wiring. Do you have power and ground at the blower motor when it is not working ?

Why would my air conditioning in my Mitsubishi eclipse cool on #1 setting but kick off on any other setting above #1?

When you say "kick off," do you mean that the fan shuts off, or that the compressor cuts off? (Unclear.)
If the fan is shutting off, check your fan control switch, blower resistor, and blower motor.
If the compressor is cutting off, check your refrigerant level, and the compressor cycling switch.

A/C fan cuts out completely when on high fan AND recirculate

Replay the blower resistor. Used to be you could replace the relay, but they are built into the resistor now. Should be under the passenger side dash. Usually behind the blower. There will be four to six small wires going to it and two big wires coming from it going to the blower motor.

Blower motor thermal cut off

Obviously, you are talking about your vintage 1932 Chevy Coupe. I know that's the vehicle because you did NOT say that it WASN'T!

The fluttering sound is probably dry leaves that got stuck in the blower assembly! Suck them out with a shop vac!

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

Fig. 1: Exploded view of the blower motor assembly
  1. For the 3.1L engine, remove the alternator belt, then remove the alternator and position aside.
  2. For the 2.5L and 3.3L engines, remove the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump.
  3. For the 3.0L engine, remove the serpentine belt.
  4. For the 3.0L and 3.3L engines, remove the retaining bolts from the power steering pump bracket, then set the pump aside.
  5. Detach the blower electrical connector, then, if accessible, remove the cooling tube.

When cutting the blower motor cover, make the cut just the thickness of the cover, which is1/ 8 inch (2mm) thick. Cutting deeper than that may damage the cooling tube.

For 1992-98 vehicles, partially cut the blower motor case cover, as shown on the cover. Cutting completely around the cover is NOT required. Swing the cut potion of the cover down.

973a989.gif Fig. 2: Some later model vehicles require you to cut the case, on the indicated lines, in order to access the blower motor

  1. If previously accessible, disconnect the cooling tube.
  2. Unfasten the attaching screws/bolts and remove the blower motor from the case.

Fig. 3: On 3.0L engines, you must remove the power steering pump for access to the blower motor
  1. If necessary, remove the fan from the blower motor.
  2. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  3. If the case was cut during removal, secure the cover using the three retaining clips. Tighten the blower motor screws to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  4. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check the blower motor for proper operation.
