Unless there is a ESP button (some cars have this feature, yours does not) no u can't turn it off. Have the system scanned by the dealer for trouble codes to help isolate the problem
the button resets by law every time the ignition is turned off and then on again, there is no way to bypass this feature. i strongly remocommend u have this feature fixed, on my car it saved my life once.the button resets by law every time the ignition is turned off and then on again, there is no way to bypass this feature. i strongly remocommend u have this feature fixed, on my car it saved my life once.

You could always beat the sensor with a wrench and break it, but then you will get annoyed with the light in your dash... Either way, unless you get it fixed, the light in the dash will stay on, and besides, I can't see why you wouldnt want it, its a very good thing to have when travelling on slippery roads.

It could be a couple of things. If you have an older battery, low voltage can cause this issue or if the battery is ok you might need to recalibrate the steering angle settings:
Start the car
Now turn the steering wheel all the way to the left... Wait a second.
Now turn the steering wheel all the way to the right...wait a second.
Now center the wheel... Light goes out and your steering angle sensor is now re-calibrated.
The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. If the ESP lights on the dashboard permanently the ESP system is faulty. You must access the ESP Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ESP ECU, in other words reset the ESP system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.

Check & replace if necessary the brake pedal switch placed above pedals on the support. If the problem still occurs you might access the ABS & ESP ECU (Electronic Control Unit) using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car, in order to pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) memored. Then you will be able to replace bad piece(s) and fix the problem by erasing all DTC stocked inside ABS ECU & reset it. The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. I'm convinced that your brake pedal switch is faulty because the glow plug warning sign went ON after ESP warning light. Just replace the brake pedal switch, see if rear stop lamps light when press the brake pedal, and test the car on the road. Good Luck!
ASR - Acceleration Skid Control system. When ASR warning light blinking the system is activated itself for car acceleration skid control. For today's typical high-torque engines, traction control (ASR) can increase both comfort and safety, particularly when driving on slippery roads or surfaces offering differing levels of grip. Traction control permits smooth starting and acceleration through the full speed range without wheel-spin or fishtailing.
ASR only operates in conjunction with the electronic accelerator (E-gas) and uses components of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If one wheel suddenly begins to rotate faster than the others (slip), ASR intervenes in the engine management system and reduces power until the wheel stops spinning. The ASR system represents a further contribution to active safety as it maintains vehicle traction and directional stability throughout the acceleration phase at any speed. In addition, it reduces tyre wear. Activation of the ASR system is indicated by a flashing indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.

MB has ASR, VW now has ESP. You posted in Jetta TDI, but say you have a SL600. Both are slip/traction control programs and both can be manually overridden by dashboard button. When the ASR or ESP is locked out, the light will be on all the time, maybe you can just push the button? When driving, if this light flashes on, then ASR/ESP is trying to help get the wheel that is spinning not to.
If the light came on after replacing parts, or a repair job, something may be wrong with the parts (non OEM), the service or a sensor may have been damaged.
Check with dealer for a recall for your vehicle on brake switch ... vw had a recall on these around 2002-2005.
