Oil pressure problem

Well our 2000 Ranger 4x4 overheated yesterday..we changed the thermostat. After that the oil pressure started fluctuating..we changed the oil and the oil filter. Now the oil pressure is fine sitting in the yard, but when we drive it down the road the oil pressure gauge starts to jump around and then drops to nothing.. When I first start my 2000 ford Ranger I have a loud knocking noise from the lower engine until it warms up. When I drive to work 15 miles on the highway the oil pressure gauge is fine. When I exit the highway and stop the gauge starts to flucuate irreatically. If I put it in park the gauge returns to normal oil pressure.

You oil pressure sending unit has gone bad, it's common to go bad and some even leak oil.
The oil pressure sensor is on the back of the block on the passenger side, you can get to it from the top and not from the bottom. There are (2) switches back there that screw in to the block and you can only see it from the top of the engine. The Oil Pressure Sending Unit is the one wire harness with a green and white strip on it. The other switch has more wires to it.
When you pick up the new sensor, make sure you get the right one. make sure you get the Oil Pressure Sending Unit which sends variable oil pressure and has only one quick connect for the wire connector. The oil pressure switch is the one that only activates the oil light on older engine
Once you get the right part at Auto Zone for around $9.00, disconnect the wire clip with the green with white strip on it. and use a deep spark plug socket with a extension and u joint to get the sensor out. The sensor comes with teflon tape already and no oil should leak out from the block. It as simple as replacing a bolt and reconnecting the wire connector.
Good luck and hope this helps, take no more then 10 min to do but about 5 hours for the engine to cool off LOL

Sounds like you have a short in the oil pressure sending unit or the plug may be loose. I would check online for the location of the unit, not the oil pump but the oil pressure sending unit, should be electrical, and when you changed the thermostat you may have got the plug-in loose somehow. I hope this is helpful in some way.

CAN A OIL PRESSURE GO DOWN TO 25 WHILE IN GEAR AND 40 WHILE HITING THE GAS IT SHOLD STAY AT 40 45 NORMALY NO MATER WHAT RIGHT ITS A 2000 DENALI 4X4 I DO HAVE ISSUES WITH 02 SENSORS IS THAT THE REASON WHY

Oil pressure is not constant, while idiling the pressure is less than when accelerating. Usually when the oil pressure gauge fluctuates it is a sign of low oil level.

Oil gauge fluctuates back and forth. sometimes

You'll need to determine if the oil pressure is actually changing, or if the sending unit or gauge is lying to you. Be certain the oil level is up to normal, then check the actual oil pressure with a test gauge. If the pressure varies (drops) at engine idle, perhaps your pressure bypass is defective, or perhaps the oil pump is worn. Testing with a known good pressure gauge should lead you in the right direction.

Overheating

You can remove the thermostat, but this is not the best thing in the world for your engine. Your thermostat lets your engine reach operating temperature quickly for best oiling. Over cooling is almost as bad as over heating and since your thermostat is relatively cheap (http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_THERMOSTAT-PERFORMANCE-Mr--Gasket_17360031-P_N6003E_P%7CGRP2061A____) 9.99 at advance, you should just go ahead and change it out. Let me know if this helps :)

2.3l ranger keeps overheating, been through two radiators already.

Hello Ranger Joe, eight months and two radiators is very uncommon. Question, Have you visually confirmed the leak in the radiators or is the leak near the hose connections? Replacing the radiator, cap, water pump, & the thermostat leaves only two others, the hoses and the engine block/heads. Far fitched will be something or somebody poking holes in the radiator.
