1999 ford ranger 4x4 wont engage

Have a 1999 ford ranger auto 3.0L sounds says its dropping into 4x4 when you turn the switch you can here it click in but its not engageing the front axle any one know what to do?

Ck frt drive shaft out of trans-fer case is turning if it is ck both hubs on outside of axles auto locking hubs have alot of problems

The hubs have a leak due to being vaccum operated. To test the hubs take the end off and ckick the inside its like a ball point pen and put the cap back on and see if they lock up. I replaced mine with rugged ridge manual locking hubs they click in the factory location

sounds like the linkage from the ignition lock cylinder to the ignition switch is broken.

1992 Ford Ranger 4.0L; I push the 4x4 button, as you drive there is a bang sound from the front end, sounds like the drivers side where the noise is coming from, Under no load not so noticeable. Universals...

Is the 4x4 an Auto Engage? If not you must be STOPPED and in NEUTRAL to activate your 4x4. Being a 1992 Ranger I am going to guess it is NOT Auto Engage, therefore you must be stopped and in neutral.

If your sure it is acually going into gear than check the auto hubs, they go bad alot. also you can with help from a 2nd person jack the truck up all 4wheels put the truck in 4x4 and drive and see if both drive shafts spin if they do its the hubs if the front one doesnt, its the transfer case

I have a 99 ranger, when I switch it into 4hi or 4low the light stays on and I can hear the shift motor on the transfer case clicking but it wont engage the 4x4. I have no idea how to troubleshoot the...

Did you know that you have to back up 50ft. to completely lock in your hubs. Not doing this and using the 4wd regularly will wear out the gears and make a clicking sound like a cv joint going out. Well, because that's kind of what's happening.

Start the car
put in " N"
turn the 4X4 switch on
Then put in gear..
What do you see now?
Do the same in reverse when you take out of 4X4
