Car starts dont run

How to test fuel regulator on a 1998 chevy s10 4 cylinders car starts dont run

  • dford_15 Jun 04, 2009

Thanks for your suggestion. The fuel pump was not putting out enough pressure. I changed the fuel pump, the car now runs, however it is not running smooth.I am getting a reading on autozone computer that there is a misfire on #1 and #3 cylinders. I am getting spark at all four wires. I changed the plugs and it has not resolved this problem.

Go to autozone, there you can rent their tool to check the pressure of your FPR. Then you should be able to connect that tool to your cars fuel line. Which will tell you the pressure.

This could and very well may be your fuel pump. Fuel pressure regulators dont go out too often.

First of all I'm glad it was your fuel pump, and nothing major.

For the misfires, it will be a tricky one to diagnose. Since you said you're getting good spark on all 4 wires, and have replaced spark plugs, only thing that would I think, would be the fuel injectors. How dirty was your fuel filter? If you answer dark, black, stuffed, nasty or anything along those lines, it is very possible dirt got by and is now in your injectors. It is relatively easy to swap those out. *If you need me to guide you through it, let me know* But go to a junk yard, and find some fuel injectors (Dont buy new, unless you're positive it is fuel injectors) If that dont help, we'll try a different approach.

    Good luck.

1998 chevy k3500. Has spark, Compression in all cylinders between 110 psi. and 125 psi. has fuel to test valve, checked MAF sensor, replaced fuel filter. acts like it wants to start. no go

Check the actual fuel pressure it needs at least 55 p.s.i., they are common for the fuel injector assembly underneath the upper intake plentum, to leak at the fuel pressure regulator.

Get a fuel regulator test done. I have same truck. Had same problem. 1 place told me my trans was bad. Another told me cataltic convertor was bad and that the fuel was coming ok when truck was started but when the gas peddle was down the amount of gas per second went down. Fuel pump is your answer. I changed the fuel pump, fuel filter and nothing else and she drives fine now.i hope this helps. My girl friends saturn was doing the same thing. Truck runs for two seconds an shut down i changed fuel pump an filter and it still shuts down but it only stay running when i put gas down in the throttle body i had a 1996 chevy 1500 i was wondering can...

No, the fuel regulator from a 96 will not fit a 98. The 98 is a vortec and i believe the 96 is TBI. You are on the right track though, but the fuel regulator is attached to the fuel injector spider and is one unit inside the upper intake. It is relative easy to replace just takes some time.

There is no fire going to the fuel pump regulator and no fire coming out of the fuel pump regulator to the fuel pump. What would cause this problem for my 1998 chevy 1500 pick up 6 cylinder engine?

Do you mean electrical current?

If so it means that the fuel pump relay is not getting 12volts from the battery OR it's not sending 12volts to the regulator OR the regulator is stuck in the open position thereby not grounding.
