My 1998 jeep wrangler will start sputtering and losing power when being driven. Then push in clutch and give it gas revs right up. Let the clutch out and sometimes it is fine for a while sometimes starts sputtering again. When this happens and you pull up to a stop the engine will almost seem like it will stall then it will recover. This problem is erratic it happens at all different speeds in all different gears and it comes and goes.
Had similar problem related to front oxygen sensor after a 20-30 min cool down, replace and fine. Although under certain driving conditions I also was getting bucking and backfiring. Found out battery was sliding into computer wiring harness disrupting sensor input/output signals. Place 1" spacer on rear battery clamp to push battery forward and cured my problem.
Crankshaft position sensor, drivers side bell housing two bolts $60 autozone
Sounds like a ignition problem, try new cap rotor and wires and plugs if this does not fix your problem it is either your coil or distribitor
