Car won't start

2005 Volvo S40 - Had a key error message and ended up having car towed and ignition barrel replaced. Work for 1 week. Now won't start again. Message is "Immobilizer, see manual" and then "Steering failure, service required." Help! Car wont start. Immobilizer message, air bag message, brake message, steering message, all of these messages appear at different attempts to start the car. Makes a ticking sound under the glove box. Won't start at all or turn over. When I tried to get a jump the dash lights are on but still won't start.

Your immobilizer is enabled. Try locking/unlocking the doors with the remote five (5) times, this should remedy.

SOURCE: Car won't start

If there is a blinking car icon with an "X" over it. This icon means the Immobilizer has been activated and hence won't allow the car to start. It could be due to a bad SCU, Start Control Unit. The SCU is actually the ignition switch on these cars.
Most of the time it's triggered by the anti-theft system..You can try this trick i learned that the dealers won't tell you...try locking and unlocking of the doors five times with the remote to reset the immobilizer and see if this helps.
Good luck...i hope this helps...please take a minute to rate me a fixya.

2005 S40 wont start. Message says key error?

Do you have the remote, i.e. The deadlock system is activated and deactivated using the remote control key fob, which allows the driver to open the car as they approach. It seems you have activated the steering lock which is for preventing thieves to make a getaway. Use the remote to deactivate it and then try starting the car.......sodeep
P.S. The security system is a built-in feature of this model

thats because your regular key probably has an electic connection to the car so go to your volvo dealer and they should be able to clear anything up or replace it with a key that will work

2005 Volvo S40 won't start

Check battery voltage while trying to start car.  May need new battery.  Since you just bought the car the battery may be weak from sitting at a car lot for a while.

Auto g/box broken

Hi,

Am afraid that it is so. To my knowledge, most 2000 Volvo S40 are front wheel drive while a number are all wheel drive. Either of which would have a serious transmission problem when towed by the rear end up.

Sorry.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
