Fuel Gage reading E after I Fill up.

#20 (permalink) 05-10-2008, 05:54 PM thegreatxterra Newbie 2005 Xterra Join Date: Mar 2008 Posts: 2 If you are reading this because you have the same problem... FILE A COMPLAINT AT THIS WEBSITE ---->>IVOQ - File a Complaint Apparently this is a problem that deserves a recall! Why should we take the cost of repair when this was an existing problem on earlier models? You'd think that something would have been done in order to prevent a repeat. Here is a copy of my complaint. "I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. After filling up my gas tank, I turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. After driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. I went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30K miles. After returning home and doing research, I went online to x.nissanhelp.com After performing a search, I came across many others who have experienced the same problem. Apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. A similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. It seems that somthing in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. There is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. If this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! Why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. Cost of repair ranges from $300-600." Please file the complaint if you agree that we, the loyal Nissan customers, should not have to pay for something that is clearly a defect on Nissan's part. I also have the same problem. I have a 2005 NISSAN Xterra with 45K and the fuel needle goes to "E" and then fluctuates up to half then goes down again. The "Service Engine Soon" light is on all the time. I had it diagnosed by a friend who hooked it up to a diagnostic computer. It gave a code indicating an issue with the fuel sending unit. And no, it was not a loose fuel cap as a possible issue according to the owners manual. I am not about to pay $500 or whatever it is for something that is a defect. I suggest that we all contact NISSAN of North America headquarters to complain. They should have a set allocation of coverage for customer service purposes on their vehicles. I used to work for TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, USA in their customer relations department and I know for a fact that they had authorization to approve a particular amount for service repairs if the customer complained enough. They should work with you and the Customer Service manager at the dealership to help you resolve the problem and keep you as a loyal NISSAN customer. Especially in these hard times for them! My engine light came on around 47K and was told by Nissan this is a common problem and the costs was over $500. This is for the fuel sending kit which other people indicate is happening to them.

The fuel level sending unit is bad. Part is $90 from dealer. You can replace it yourself and save $500 from stealership. Drop gas tank and remove fuel pump. Sending unit is attached to fuel pump.

03 bmw 530i, was driving it yesterday and the car started to viberate bad, then the car started to slow, it seems the brakes all locked up, and the car slow and then would not move. i could hit the gas and the car would not move at all. let it sit for a few hours went back to it and it drove about a mile and then the same thing happened again. a roll back came and got it, and when they winched it up on all 4 wheels were locked up. when we got to my place i was able to back it off and pull in spot but then locked up again. Any ideas of where to start looking, and what could be the problem? thanks for your help. This car has been nothing but problems, are these cars usually problematic? thanks

View My Garage Can you describe the lock up in detail? It is hard to believe the brakes are locking up, they are a simple mechanism.

I also have a 2003 530i and I did the brakes yesterday in fact. Are you sure it is not an engine problem?

View My Garage when the brakes start to lock, and i stop, i can press the gas and the rear tires will spin a little but it wont move. Also when the pulled it onto the roll back, it was in neutral and all 4 tires where locked up and dragged all the way up. but after it sat for 30 mins (i guess they cooled down) and it would move just a little more. hope this helps.

Jack each wheel up (don't remove tire), spin the tire, does it spin.

Otherwise what you described above may be a failing transmission.

View My Garage i dont think its the transmission as the front wheels are locked up and the car is rear wheel drive, so that would take the transmission out of it. i know for a fact the front wheels are locked up.

But usually this happens one caliper at a time, not all 4.

If I still needed information, I'd have a light person sit in the vehicle to gently press on the brakes as I spun the wheels

What happened when you did that?

One test of the ABS that 'might' work is simply to disconnect the ABS control module harness to see if that changes anything.

I am going to paste a list of potential causes for a p0460. There is a cure for a dirty reader card and Ford recommends CHEVRON TECHRON fuel system cleaner. Run tank low, put in cleaner, use best gas you can find, avoid your frequent brand.

P0460 - Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Malfunction The PCM monitors the fuel level input (FLI) circuit for electrical failure. Incorrectly installed fuel gauge

the problem would be that of the fuel gauge which in newer models are mounted in the fuel tank, or the fuse for the gauges are burnt out, or there is a loose connection
