SOURCE: how to replace a 2005 pontiac sunfire thermostat
Should be in a housing just at the motor end of the upper radiator hose. Trace the upper hose down under the alternator.
Pull the hose off (be sure you have a way to catch the coolant
first!) Then you unbolt the thermostat bolts and pull out the
thermostat. REMEMBER which way it goes---the part with the "nose"
points toward the radiator. Then clean both surfaces of the housing
really good, and put on a new thermostat gasket. You can seal it with
some light white grease, but just enough to make the gasket stick.
Don't use goopy silicone sealant! Tighten the bolts but don't go crazy.
Just enough to strain the muscles in your arm using a 3/8 drive wrench.
Do NOT put your back into it. NICE and SNUG. Now you have to fill up
the plastic reservoir tank. Then you run the engine for for just 30
seconds or so, then shut it off. Now you have to find the BLEED SCREWS
and open them up so as to let air out of the cooling system. Then close
the air bleeds. Repeat this filling up and running the engine briefly
until coolant comes out of the air bleeds. Then top off the reservoir
tank.
I think one air bleed is by the pipe where you put in the oil. Once
you find it, look for another one like it. Sorry I don't have a manual
for your car.

Drain some of the coolant until you are sure it will not spill over when you remove the hose.
Remove the hose from the radiator .(Top) Hose. follow the hose to the thermostat housing. Remove the hose by removing the clamps.the thermostat is located in the housing. remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing. remove the housing. be careful to notice the position of the thermostat. Make sure you get the proper degree thermostat . Ask the vendor. give as much info as possible. mainly the size of the engine. remove the thermostat. You will get a new gasket with your new thermostat. Clean off the sufaces of the thermostat housing before installing the gasket.use a little grease to hold the gasket in place. and reinstall the new thermostat. replace housing and hose and refill with antifreeze/coolant. i hope this works for you and you vote for my answer.

SOURCE: Were is the thermostat located in a Pontiac Sunfire 2000?
Hi:
Your thermostat is located under the thermostat housing, which is what the upper radiator hose clamps to on the top of your engine. Basically, you need to start with a cold engine, drain your radiator, then unclamp the upper radiator hose from the engine. Remove the bolts from the thermostat housing, and gently tap on it to remove it. clean up the mounting surfaces on both the engine and the housing, and install a new thermostat, and new gasket. tighten to proper torque, reconnect the radiator hose, then refill up the radiator and cooling system.
