I have a 1996 Jimmy 4.3L, just had my intake redone, I also had the cap, rotor, plugs, wires and ignition coil replaced, just the other night going down the road at 65 MPH it just stalled, turned the key and nothing, lights were still nice and bright so I had juice, get it towed home and 2 days later go out and it starts right up, don't like paying tow bills so I have not driven it anywhere, any ideas on what to try?

If you can't duplicate the problem in t he shop its going to be tough to find. It could have been a fuel problem, or the ignition module. Even the new coil could be faulty.

if the inatake manifold was just replaced its possible there was a mistake made. if coolant filled the chamber again it would have died and not started up again until it dried up (the 2 day waiting period) its also possible the new intake gaskets caused a small rupture to the head gasket. check the oil and see if it has any coolant mixed with it. if it does it will look something like chocolate milk. also when it dies remove a spark plug crank the engine see if any water comes from the injector socket. do this for all plugs. if coolant comes out then you know which bank has the problem.

SOURCE: 2001 gmc jimmy not starting

Did they do a fuel pressure pressure test to determine that its fuel pump? And if so what was the p.s.i.?It should be around 55 to 60 p.s.i. a few pounds under 55 p.s.i. Pump needs replaced, Your shop should have chk. this when it was there the first time. Did they by chance chg. the fuel filter, that can hinder it from starting too.

Testimonial: "it was the fuel pump thank you"

Check the wire harness from the frame to the gas tank. Lots of road salt collect there and after a few years the conntction go bad.

SOURCE: stalled twice while towing at 65 mph. sputtered

If the scan will narrow down which o2 sensor it is and replace it. If it has more than one on that year that is. Under load you will probable have a richer fuel mix. If the sensor is going going bad it may only get out of spec reading under heavy load and warmer temps. I have had similar issues with GM and it was easily fixed.

SOURCE: 1996 gmc jimmy wont start seems like advanced

You said the problem happened right after the engine was replaced correct? If so bring number cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. Remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is lined up with the number one spark plug wire. It's possible the distributor was installed 180 degrees out.

SOURCE: 2000 gmc jimmy 4x4 p0300. Replaced cap, rotor, wires, plugs, map sensor, checked icm. Nothing has helped

Just a thought, pull the dist.cap and make sure the rotor has
no side to side play ,thinking maybe a bad upper bushing in
the dist. Also,if the EGR valve has carbon and soot built up
on the piston it will make it idle really poor ,but run ok.
Might pull the EGR and clean it with intake cleaner.
Hope this helps.

Any fault codes?

Do you have fuel pressure?

If not, check relay, check to see if the tan wire in the relay connector goes to ground initially for priming. If not check harness for damage. If yes, initially then no after a few seconds replace the oil pressure switch.

Are you getting spark?

If you still have the distributor: check condition of cap and rotor and center button of cap. The button should extend at least 1/8 inch out (usually more) , these can break.

If still no spark, check for primary voltage at the coil. If that is okay, check for continuity across the inductive pickup, these wires are known to break. If that is okay, replace ignition module.

If you have the coil packs, try having someone start it at night while you look at the various parts of the ignition system for arcing. The carbon tracking is not always visible but the arcs reveal a great deal at night.

If it still refuses to start inspect the wiring harness for damage. Especially to the injector wires.

I have a 1996 chevy 5.7 vortec engine idles high at 1000 and when you open throttle fully it has like a misfire no power

This could be anything from a bad vacuum leak to bad ignition coil to spark plug wires to distributor cap and rotor or ignition coil. From the sound of this I would look to the vacuum leak or the EGR.

I have a 2000 gmc jimmy with a service engine soon light. i received the code p0302 misfire detected cylinder 2.I replaced spark plugs and distributor cap and rotor. but still on. any other suggestion?

Well, Spark Plugs wear over time, seldom fail to fire
A worn or dirty rotor and cap will still fire, also

You never throw new wires at it,I don't,mine last 18 years,
on all vehicles

You need some OBD2 knowledge, start studying

The PO302,last # is the cylinder
Number 2 is misfiring

If you got individual coils, go there
If you got an ignition module, for all the cyl,go there
If you got plug wires, there is an extremely odd chance, one burned out inside ,on #2
& you did say your have a dist cap.

So you do have a cylinder monitor, that detected it
That may be the crank sensor, another possible

Need to know the system and how to test it.

You need to give veh specifics ,not just a year

I have a 99 gmc jimmy sls. when i go to start it it takes me two times to start it...now it is starting to putt when i go to take off like it is hesitating..what could be the cause of this

Your ignition coil is going bad. Or at least the wire to it is. Start the truck in a shady or dark area and watch for sparks around the ignition coil. If you see some, give it a tune up, plugs, wires and cap and rotor. If you don't see any sparks, give it a tune up and also change the coil. Good luck.

I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3L. The car is hard to start after it sits for the day. I found an oxidized distributer. I sanded the posts and it ran fine for about a month. I then replaced the...

moisture in your cap causes oxidation. You should check to make sure the seal for you distributor between the distributor and the cap is still good. Also a faulty ignition system such as a problematic coil or high resistance in your ignition wires can lead to ignition related problems. Doing a partial tune doesn't always work. Do the wires, plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, PVC valve and depending on the mileage the ignition coil.

HAVE A 1996 GMC JIMMY 4.3 NUMBER 1 PLUG IS NOT GETTING ANY FIRE TO IT .I CHANGED PLUGS ,PLUG WIRES , DISTRIBUTER CAP AND ROTOR BUTTON SO WHAT COULD BE MY PROBLEM?

it does not mean new parts are alway good. subtitive a known good wire and check for spark at the wire, if there is spark then check the plug.
if there is no spark then go back to your cap.

Car will not start when it's raining

9 of ten times that's caused by bad ignition wires, cap, rotor or sometimes even the ignition coil. Dampness makes it easier for spark to bridge a gap and jump to ground when wires are porous or there are carbon tracks on the other components. If the spark escapes before it gets to the plugs, the engine will not start.
