My S Type 2.7D has a small issue with gear change when cold at present. When the auto box shifts up from 3rd to 4th gear there is a noticeable slip in the revs (like you would get in a manual transmission if the clutch wasn't biting correctly. No problems at all when warm
You need to change the oil in the auto box. if this dont help then the servo in the auto box is sticking.
I had the diagnostic this morning, and found a fault commonly associated with Transmission-Engine communication. Fault was reset and the tech says if it does not solve the problem (which he believes there is a good chance it should) then a fluid change should be next logical step.
Hi Johnathon. It sounds like your transmission has a sticky or worn Valve Body shift valve bore wear. It is also possible the 3-4 shift sprag is slipping/damaged. ...and perhaps just general wear and tear. You can change out the fluiid and filter and see if this improves things.Make sure you get the compatable ATF for you vehicle transmission.

Have a transmission shop drive this cold and give you their thoughts, but I will bet the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced.
Testimonial: "That is a worst case scenario I would rather avoid, even with the warranty cover. I would rather not be without the car several days. A diagnostic this morning turned up a Transmission-Engine communication fault code which has now been cleared. After a full ignition cycle it has no re-appeared. But the tech suggests if it does I should try a fluid change before anything more drastic."

SOURCE: high revs when changing up through the gears
it is just one of those cars that drive like that its different but you need to change your driving style to suit
SOURCE: truck wont shift automatic. stays in 3rd gear. can shift manually
either repair or replace the transmission...sounds like the sensor went out
SOURCE: 02 jeep liberty won't shift into 3rd or 4th gear.
Ratio codes generally indicate a pressure loss & slipping which the computer reads as a gear ratio problem. Likely you need a rebuild.
SOURCE: 4l60e slips in 3rd and 4th
There are to many things that can cause this problem, best thing to is go get the ECM scanned for DTC codes at a transmission shop or Auto zone or Parts Source since they scan for free.
The ECM should have DTC code in it's memory on how the transmission is Performing and have the Transmission line tested for Fluid pressure.
Good luck and hope this helps. Oh and also ways check with more then on transmission shop if there tell you that you need a new Transmission,
It could be a simple as the transmission filter falling off causing the lost of transmission fluid pressure. Check the transmission fluid too.
SOURCE: E40d trans will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear, only rev. 1+2
check or replace your thottle position sensor tps that trans needs to know where the throttle is to shift if it is bad it will do as you say wont shift to third
another telltale is it will act like it goes into lockup when shifting into reverse and stall the engine
