Automatic transmission not shifting gears

post year.
if tranny slips its bad tranny. (depends on year)
if the engine misfire and has weak power that is not a tranny issues
but a engine issue., have some how knows cars tell you which is which.

if you mash the throttle and the dash RPM goes way over 3000 RPM
that is in fact a bad tranny in any gear Forward or reverse.
shaking is the engine, i guess.

do you check fluid levels on your car.
and use the operators guide for the A/T tranny levels, dont guess.
use the book it has tricky steps. read it.

good luck to you.

When i put car in reverse makes a winding noise and wont shift an any other gears

if engine rpm advances (fast to 3000), and the car dont move
the tranny is bad (what part , dont know)

so did you get to 3000 ENGINE rpm and car didnt move.?
that is bad trans. its slipping
1: check all fuses
2: check levels of ATF in tranny
3: do the 50,000 mile full flush and filter. change and pray?
4: do the FSM stall test, It fails, bad.
5: step 2 in FSM after above fails, measure (gage) the tranny pump pressure. if bad pressure (2 tests) tranny is bad.

all that is in FSM
or alldata.com login and read ON CAR tranny tests.

A/T or M/T auto or stick? tranny????
what does will not , mean?
I cant move the shift lever
i cant shift, to 2nd
IT (autobox ) will not shift ever, or slips or flares. or?
if its and A/T autotranny, tell me what it does right and wrong
here is an example.
i start engine.
i shift to drive car dont move, in any gear
i see RPM race high with right foot over 3000 RPM.
tranny failure. (slips)
or RPM stays near 1500, and engine sounds loaded,
and i find the parking brake stuck on, or the brakes are full of ice
and stuck fast.

1987 escort doesnt shift untill 3000 rpm

Depending on what gearing setup the car was originally put on, most cars that I have owned that were automatic shifted between 3000 and 4000 RPM. My 97 Ford Escort ZX2 needed to shift around 2000 RPm from 1st into 2nd, but it was a manula which allows you to feel the point of shift alot better. maybe have your onboard computer checked and tranny serviced.

I just bought a 2001 pontiac grand am se with 99890 miles. I would like to know what rpm is the proper shift point from first to second gear? Mine shifts at like 3000 to 3500 rpm and shifts firmly is that...

Hello, well at what rpm it shifts at of course depends on how hard your pressing the accelerator at that moment,if you floor the accelerator it will shift at higher rpm (red line) but if you take off very slowly it should shift at a much lower rpm....but to answer your question 3000-3500 is a good shifting rpm( if the gauge red lines at 6000-6500 rpm) and firm shifting is a good thing, slow, sluggish and hesitant shifting is a sign of bad things to come from a tranny!! ps keep the engine oil,and transmission oil changed for long life out of your car engine and tranny. good luck and enjoy your new car......yz-maniac.
