How often gear oil should be changed - Testing Autos

The clunking noise is a sign that the rear axle diffential gear oil needs to be changed. Put a catch pan underneath it, and remove all the bolts from the differential cover. Drain the old oil, and spray brake cleaner into the area to flush all dirt deposits from the unit. The brake cleaner evaporates and won't leave a residue.

Put a silicone sealant around the cover before remounting. Refill the unit with the gear oil weight specified in your maintenance manual, and also add a tube of limited slip differential paste (available at Autozone). Fill the differential until it begins to overflow from the fill hole.

Concerning the black gunky substance leaking out: there's a good chance that the axle seal is worn and letting the differential gear oil leak out. You should consider replacing those before refilling the differential. It will continue to leak until you do so.

If the yellow fluid is bright yellow, and has a foul smell when you smell it up close (put a little on your finger and see), then it is most likely gear oil in the differential.

The only yellow fluid at the center rear of the Jeep is the gear oil in the differential. It is probably due to a leaking seal at the pinion seal, (at the front of the differential where the drive shaft connects) which would then run down the differential housing and drip off the bottom. I described the smell before because gear oil is quite foul smelling so if you wet your fingers on the fluid and smell it you might get more idea that it is gear oil.

If it is the pinion seal the drip should be in the middle of your rear tyres.

yes it is leaking differential oil and means that your differential gears are dry and winding becuase rubbing against each other you need buy a differential seal kit and clean off old seal taking apart differential and then put neew on then fill with differential fluid you can use the gasket maker if cant buy a gasket but should be done asap or you will burn up the gears and be left without a vehicle

you dont need gear oil. you just need trans fluid. the differential is part of trans and uses trans fluid from trans. just put it in though dip stick tube

Filling a Rear Differential

1. Be sure the car is raised on four jack stands and is level. It will be more difficult to fill the differential if you've only got it raised in the rear.
   
2. Place an oil drain pan underneath the plug to catch any leaks or drips. Keep shop rags handy for any spills.
   
3. Check your service manual for the amount of fluid your differential needs, if you're completely refilling the system. Two quarts should be enough in most cases.
   
4. Remove the spouts on the gear oil containers. Peel off seals, then replace spouts. Use side cutters (or any cutting tool you've got handy) to clip off the top of each spout.
5. Remove the differential fill plug using a 3/8 inch drive ratchet with extension. (Some models may require a hex key or screwdriver, but the 3/8 inch is the most common plug design.)
6. Take the gear oil container and fit the spout into the fill hole. Pour the fluid inside. You can gently squeeze the bottle to speed the process. Repeat with a second bottle if necessary.
7. Fill the differential until the fluid starts draining back out of the hole.
   
8. Clean and replace fill plug. Use lock tight (thread locker) to help seal if desired. You can see my eHow article "How to Replace Rear Differential Fill Plug" (video) for more information.
   
9. Take the car for a drive around the block to get the gear oil moving. When you return, check underneath for any leaks from the fill plug or differential cover.

The differential will have a plug in the driver's side of the housing that is removed with a 3/8" drive ratchet or square drive. Be sure you know what type of fluid is recommended for your vehicle. It will depend on whether it is a locking differential or standard.

I've never seen a differential fail in that situation but having been in the business a long time I've learned that all things are possible...Exactly where is the oil leaking on the diff? I'd suggest you get back onto level ground and remove the rear cover on the diff and take a look at the gears. Possible that the spider gears in the center section have broken.

I'm assuming you are talking about gear oil for the differentials. It's the pumpkin shaped thing on the axles. If you want to change the oil, loosen up the bolts with a drain pan underneath it. Clean the mating surfaces of the differential cover/housing and apply RTV to seal it. There should be a rubber grommet toward the top of the pumpkin, remove it after everything is sealed and fill to bottom of hole. That's how I do my '93, anyways. Some call for friction modifiers to be added to the gear oil, keep that in mind too. It should be in your manual.

hmm, might be that the gear oil of your rear diff needs to either drained and refilled or just topped off. the gear oil for differentials like those use a special kind of oil which is called hypoid and this is specifically used on limited slip differentials.
