4 wheel drive (auto locking hubs) seems to be trying to engage.

Does yours have AUTO hubs, there are some luxory models have auto hubs, these rely on difference in drive on the axles,(wheel spin) others have manual locking hubs, these actually need to be engaged manually, these require you to twist the centre of the hub to engage and disengage the front hubs, these sometimes require you to reverse to disengage properly, Rodeo had both depending on model. I had a 4 wheel drive suburban..it had issues with the high-lock and low-lock..I just used the auto setting because all four wheels were getting power anyway..only time you need lock is when you plan to go bogging in really deep mud..on snow/ice all you need is all wheel drive..you actually have better control..as long as it works in all wheel you should be fine..also be checking the front hubs.. are yours full time or do you have lock outs..on the axle hubs..thats my question

manual or auto hubs?how do u now it is not engaging?.u can lift the front end up in 4 wheel make sure hubs r engaged .rotate the tire by hand ,and check to see if the drive shaft is turning [from the wheel to the front diff] u most likely have a bad locking hub.if it is not turning ur front tire is not locked up

Do you have auto locking hubs on the front wheels, or manual locking hubs?
If you have auto locking hubs chances are they are not engaging properly and will need to be removed and spline sets checked for broken teeth on locking hub and locking shaft.
If you have manual locking hubs then check that they are firm when turning to engage them in the lock position.If they are light when engaging them to the lock position then they my have broken/worn out the locking hub and spline. Also check that the engaging spring inside the hub has enough tension to engage the hubs they may be broken. If the hub are all ok then you have a problem in the transfer box, where the 4WD lever is not meshing the transfer box properly. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

If your sure it is acually going into gear than check the auto hubs, they go bad alot. also you can with help from a 2nd person jack the truck up all 4wheels put the truck in 4x4 and drive and see if both drive shafts spin if they do its the hubs if the front one doesnt, its the transfer case

? are they manual locking hubs where you have to get out and lock them? if not you may have a vacuum leak to your actuaters .my spelling is terrible.another ? is the clunking sound only when you put in 4wheel or is it in 2 wheel also.if so you also may have a bad universal joint either in the front drive axle or the rear drive axle.

the hubs ussualy have two positions, auto and lock. i dont know of any other positions. they will only go in one way. and the hubs should be clearly marked on the outside with an arrow pointer.

I have the same hubs on my truck as what you have. I have been told it can be done you just have to know if you have a dana 50 or 60 front axle. The warn hubs i'm sure are a better quality hub but if your worried about the auto feature of your current hubs. That is vacuum accuated when you 4 wheel drive is engaged. And there fore vacuum engaged. Mine used to work great but after a lot of mudding sand got into seals and vacuum didn't work anymore so i treat them as free/lock hubs.
