2004 Dodge ram diesel just die out of the blue.

The truck die. I let it sit for a minute. It would start and run for 5 to 10 sec. Took out the fuel filter to see if it was getting fuel. Reinstalled and cranked a couple times. It finally started ran for about 5 min dieseled then died again. Its a fairly new fuel filter. My first guess is fuel pump. But would like confirmation.

If you are certain it is the pump, to make sure go to a local auto parts like autozone that rents tools, and rent a fuel pressure gauge set, when you return the set you get your money back. Free test. That is where I would start. Make sure you have good spark too.

It sounds like it could be the transfer pump. Turn the key on and then crank the engine for about 1 second but leave the key in the run position and listen for the transfer pump to run. It should run for about 15 seconds after you stop cranking. If not, then you will need to replace the transfer pump with a in-the-tank conversion kit if your is mounted on the side of the engine block below the fuel filter housing. If you already have the in-the-tank pump then it might be siezed or the "sock" might be plugged up with alge or other contaminants. I usually lift the bed rather than removing the tank to replace the fuel module. If the check engine light is on you might want to have it scanned for codes to make sure since the modules can be spendy.

Michael- I just had the same think happen to my 2004 Dodge just yesterday. The dealership tells me it's the transfer pump, but it now requires it to be moved from the side of the engine to the fuel tank. The parts seem to be scarce, and may take a little over a week for me to get them here in Boston, and the total job is $1100. Hope you got your's fixed.

Sounds like you overheated, the clicking sound could be preignition ping. Check coolant lever. Don’t fill when hot, let engine cool down before refilling coolant
