the trailer will be 4 wire and many cars (most) are not compatible to 4 wire trailers. L,R,T, Ground,

This is the OEM / Factory set up for trailers from my 1990 FSM. Note that they used a flat-5 connector instead of the typical flat-4 plug that 99% of the known universe uses. I don't know if newer XJ's came with the flat-4... The 7-conductor schematic is typical although you'll find that some agricultural / horse trailers are wired differently (click image for zoom)...
Here's a scan of the "instruction sheet" that came with my
utility trailer's flat-4 wiring kit. (Retouched for clarity.)
All the wiring you need is there in the trunk, and the harness plug you buy will have quick connectors to splice each lead.
So all you have to do is to run the wires out of the trunk.
You can drill a hole, but most people just loosen the bottom of a light lense, and stick it throught there.
The rubber usually is flexible enough to allow this.
But don't do it at the top, because then water could get in.
if you call the local stereo shop they likely have a conversion wiring harness or can build a proper 1 for you so you can allways remove it and reinstall original if nessarry
Are your brake lights not working either? Then it may be a blown fuse. They are on the same circuit. If "yes" to both of the above, then do you have a tow bar? Many problems like this are related to people borrowing/renting trailers with dodgy wiring which then damages your wiring.
There should be a 30 AMP mini blade fuse in the fuse box under the hood that you are probably missing. I assume that since you got the relays with the wiring kit, that you got the kit from a Nissan dealer. If that is true, there should be a fuse in the kit also- in a sealed bag that has the "trailer wiring harness owner's manual" in it.
