Hi, I have a 1996 Honda Element with quite a peculiar problem: Every morning I have to leave the car running for about five minutes and sporadically rev the engine while it's in park in my driveway before driving anywhere. I've noticed that when I start up the car after it hasn't been running for 10+ hours, the temperature needle is completely on the cold side. It takes about 5 minutes for it to go back to the middle between cold and hot, and then it's safe to take off. If I don't do so, the car will sputter and turn off on its own at the first stop sign or stop light I come across. This means that the car stops while it's in drive, so I have to switch it to park, turn the key and then start the car up again and pull of to the side and leave it running until the temperature gage is back to the middle. It's been to the mechanic twice and the problem still persists.
Temp.gauge really has nothing to do with the perfomance of the engine. If the car has been unused for a few hours, the engine oil etc settles down. It is good idea to let it run after a cold start so the oil circulates in the engine. Keep in mind it's a 1996 model and needs more care. Keep servicing regularly.

I used to have this problem too on my 95 Honda Civic EX. It would get hot then it would cool down when I stopped. I replaced the thermostat and it took care of the problem. I am not a mechanic but it was real easy to change out. I bought it at Auto Zone and they even gave instructions on how to replace it. Also don't forget to buy the new seal for it. Hope this helps.

Hi,
The first thing you need to do with this car is have it scanned for error codes. Autozone will do this for free and their OBD diagnostic scanner will retrieve any error codes stored in the vehicles ECU.
The reason for this is that an intermittent fault like this is very typical of a faulty engine sensor. The working diagnosis given your description, is extremely typical of a faulty crankshaft sensor.
However, it is extremely important to have the error codes checked with the OBD scanner to prevent throwing money at the problem with the incorrect replacement components. There are other potential causes for this behaviour but a faulty crankshaft sensor is the most likely fault.
The error codes will confirm this to be the fault or point to the offending component with more certainty.
