a leak in the valve cover gasket. When oil leaks from the valve cover gasket, it will often burn off on the manifold.
a blown oil seal causing oil to burn off on the exhaust system
check your exhaust for "blue smoke" a sign that the engine is actually burning oil. Just guessing here but a 16 year old Volvo is bound to have quite a few miles on it.
I hope you found this post helpful in diagnosing your problem. Thank you for using Fixya!

Are you sure it's burning the oil? Check your oil pan gasket and valve cover gaskets for leaks. Is the car smoking? (light grayish or white smoke is oil, black or dark bluish is fuel) Could be bad valve seals. Also, main seals can leak oil out onto exhaust parts.
If there is a blue tint you are burning oil. You may have worn rings, or you may have one ring that is stuck and letting oil by. There may also be hardened valve stem seals. As old as it is try switching to full synthetic oil after doing an engine clean. It will not burn.
check your v-tec solenoidgasket mine was doing same thing it will not leak alot unless your driving it a high rate of speed and u will dump oil and not even notice it..
check your spark plug wells for oil build up. A BIG problem with the early saturn's are related to the rubber valve cover gaskets the go around the spark plug wells. I have changed dozens that just ware out.
no, but with a older vehicle like this, it does not hurt to use a thicker oil grade like 10w30. i would also use this oil stabilizer called Lucas engine oil treatment once a year. it goes in like molasses and from experience, it cures the light engine knock.
if engine burning 2 quarts a week no oil leaks time for a over haul.check pvc valve shake it if rattle its good if not replace it. change valve seals. because if they are leaking they will cause oil to leak bt them burn with gas. also change plugs and wires.if this dont work . time for over haul.
Saturn's have a recurring problem for burning oil; almost all of them do it. If your really worried, put in a high mileage oil and an oil stabilizer like lucasoil or something.
