2001 Focus: Speedometer at 0, blank odometer, rough shifting

2001 Ford Focus with a newly replaced engine.

After driving with the new engine, two warning lights came on -- the Check Engine and an exclamation point. Right before this happened, my speedometer dropped to zero and hasn't returned.

When I turn off the car and restart it, only the check engine light is on and the odometer works (trip is reset to 0.0), but it won't shift out of first gear when in D. After a bit, it will start shifting (very rough shifts through all four gears), but the odometer is blank again and the second warning light is on.

The code reading indicates it's the speed sensor -- but I want to see if there's anything easy before I put even more money into this vehicle.

Thanks!

Needs a vehicle speed sensor, its on the trans. if the engine was just put in( within like 2 or 3 days, not weeks) then it may have been busted in the engine swap. hope this helps and good luck

2001 Buick Century Limited speedometer problem, Speedometer not working but odomitor ok. Is there a fuse?

if the odometer is working then the problem is with the speedometer head unit as the odometer gets its information from the same source as the speedometer. you can have the speedometer head checked and fixed if its fixable.

Your problems sound like they are electrical, i would suggest you take it to an electrician and have them identify the problem, it most likely is not the speedometer as all that does is just output the speed, the speed sensor might be one thing you can look at.

Speedometer, odometer not working at the same time the CD player

Check the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), it is located on the transmission at the rear of the engine. The first to look for is a faulty connection to this sensor, sometimes cleaning the connector and putting it back solves the problem. If this does not solve this issue you might ask your mechanic to replace it, shouldn't be too expensive as is a common part to fail.
Does the transmission shift erratically sometimes?

You'll need to bring it to a garage (autozone, walmart, etc) to have it scanned for the exact code(s) to determine the cause of the light. the light can mean anything.

Odometer and speedometer problems

You need to check the speed sensor in your rear differential. It should be held in with one 10mm bolt and then you can pull it out of the housing. You will probably find some metal on the end of it, because it is magnetic. This is due to wear in the differential. If you clean the metal residue off of the sensor and re-install it should clear up the problem. While you are there, it would be a good time to check the fluid in the differential as well.

Odometer and speedometer don't work sometimes

speed sensor runs all three gages. Sounds like trans might have lose or missing bolts. Get it checked out.
