Runs fine when it is warm so it has to be something with a cold starting engine having to do with air, fuel mixture, not being right for cold engine. Could also be an ECM issue.
very important to have proper coolant solution.50/50..too much antifreeze will make heater act up.antifreeze tester will eliminate that.warm engine and check both heater hose if they are the same tempature.if not remove both hoses and garden hose through the
heater core to flush both ways.try not to disturb the heat core and remove hoses where they connect to the engine.let me know if that helps
change the thremastat that could be or there may be air in the core disconnect the two hoses that go to the and run water threw the core with a garden hose hook hoses back up and that would get the air if u dont have a leak in the system goodluck hope i help out.
On the a/c send the radiator to flush,as for the heater you need to check the vacuum hoses that goes into the contrl panel, check for a leak on vacuum in the engine as well.
Could be the heater core is plugged. Open hood and see if you can find where the hosed go through the firewall of the car. Once motor is warm check to see if both hoses are warm. If not the cor is plugged and needs to be replaced.
If the thermostat is stuck open it would eventually get hot after a while. It's like some people think you can remove the thermostat to keep the engine from getting hot so in theory it could for a little while, however it would eventually overheat. As for the gas mileage being bad yes if it was stuck open and was not warming up fast enough the computer would take longer to go into closed loop, meaning the engine temperature takes to long to heat up so it burns rich until it does warm up enough, however it would be a minor change of mileage say 2 to 3 miles to the gallon. Hope this helps.
Check both heater hoses under the hood put your hand on each one and feel the temperature make sure the engine is warmed up to operating temperature though. If one feels hot and the other one is cold or luke warm your heater core may be plugged up also on those hoses see if there is a heater valve connected to either one if so make sure it is operating properly.
