While driving the head and dash lights go dim then come back online. checked the charge system from battery and noticed voltage drop(12.8)lights dim, right after a quick hit of the accelorator, then jumps to 14.4 . also car is turning off while driving(main issue) no gauge/hazard/headlights.will not restart!!! removed battery for bench test(only 2mo old) has full charge. installed it and hasnt done it again(driven 10mi). removed the negative terminal from batt and stayed running till i hit the gas and died immediatly. lil help please thanx

hey ram, fuse and batt were 1st thing we checked.drove it autozone and hooked his diagnostic machine and obd to it and said everything was ok.he suggested next time it acted up to run a wire from neg on batt to a ground on engine. checked the grounds from batt no issue.when i took it out for test drive last night now i get a batt light at 2500rpm along with the dimming lights.all signs point to alt! are the autozone diagnostic machines reliable?should i remove alt and have it bench tested? thanx rich

2012 honda civic wouldn't start this morning so, replaced the factory battery with new one. Garage read 12.6 v on alternator check and said alternator is bad as well. Is this a normal reading?

No. Charging voltage should be above 13 to 15. BUT, this vehicle has GM's power management feature. It only charges when it needs it. Read this post to see how it works. Ask the shop if they conducted the proper tests for this system.

When headlights turned on the dashboard lights dim and after 5 minutes a warning sound comes on.

Sounds like your charging system needs some attention.
1st check battery for voltage should be 12.50 or better with car off
2nd, start car check battery for voltage again should be 14.0 to 14.75 volts.
3 with running turn on headlamps and check charging voltage again if your voltage dropped to battery voltage your charging system is not working.

Flickering/Dimming Lights

you forgot, does it do that running engine or not.?
ok the main battery is car is doing that.
use a voltmeter, at the battery or even at the CIG lighter port.
12.6v DC, not running. rested. running voltage is 13.3v to 15vdc,

start engine, is rpm above 800 RPM at all times, or more?
if not, the alternator will be too slow, and drop out and when that happens , the lamps will dim. (a 3 volt drop does that)
1: all fuses good
2: battery term lugs clean, not green
3: fan belt to alternator not loose. slipping.
4: charge lamp on dash not ON, running.
5: check engine lamp not on, running (if yes, scan it now)
6: test the battery , batteries are LOW life objects, (die-easy-not-hard)
test the battery , using a load tester or take it in for testing, it's free.
or try a spare battery from another car. do not reverse POLARITY.
this gets the lions share.

2007 Yukon XL, 1500 SLT, 4WD, headlights randomly go bright to dim and back very quickly

Yes this can be a normal condition caused by load being applied to the headlights and that lowers the voltage, the lites dim, then the load is removed and the lights brighten. Typical loads that cause this are AC climate control related. Have the Alternator load tested to confirm there is no problem in the charging system. Also have the battery tested, a battery that is starting to fail can cause this problem as well, a failing battery takes a huge amount of charging system power to keep it up, so that makes the lighting see higher spikes in voltage

All of the lights dim when letting off the gas pedal. Is the problem the Battery?

Check the cable connections to the battery. If they are loose or dirty, clean them and tighten them. Check the battery for water while you are at it.

If that is okay, have an auto parts store check your charging system - they do it for free. You could be in the early stages of alternator failure or diode failure.

I had a van that did this for years but was always leery of it.

I have a 1991 mercury capri. Tonight when i was driving home the tail lights and dash lights quit working and the headlights were very very dim. Is this a broken fuse problem or something else?

Check your alt.. alt voltage output should be at least 13.2, sounds like it's not charging and your possibly running off the battery, as for the dash and tail lights, there both on the same system, check the fuse.

I have a 1996 Concorde with the 3.5 L EGJ V6 engine. last week when driving it the lights started to dim..until i pressed on the gas..then they would last a min or so and dim again. then the abs light went...

Sounds like the alternator is not fully charging the battery -- could be faulty alternator (including faulty voltage regulator), or just bad connections between battery / alternator / ground.

More info, please let me know.

My lights started going dim on the dash. the voltage kight started comeing on and then the warning sign came on check chargeing system

You need a new alternator. Also check to be sure that your serpentine belt didnt break. The car was not charging the battery (either the belt broke or the alternator is bad) and running entirely off the battery causing the lights to dim and the voltage light and check charging system lights to come on. Good luck to you. Thanks for using fixya!

Sincerely,

JC
