Bmw starting problems

I have a 2002 BMW 318 i E 46 ( N 42 )with a starting problem . You have to crank it and crank it till it eventually starts . When you do get it started it initially is lumpy and stinks of fuel , rev it a bit and it clears . Once running it goes fine without any faltering . Changed Spark Plugs , all 4 spark plug coils , fuel pump , camshaft sensors , throttle body . We have had it at BMW for diagnostics and they can't find any faults .Everytime we change something for about the next 4 times that you crank it starts first click and then goes back to not starting just cranking over .... Any suggestions . Out of interest I have noticed on looking through you tube videos that on a lot of the dashboards the antiskid icon is illuminated in orange . When we first got the car there was about 4 lights on the dashboard and when we did diagnostics it said there was an internal fault in the ABS module , so we purchased a second hand module and installed . Two lights remained on , one being the antiskid light and the handbrake both in orange . When we plugged it back into the diagnostics it said that the Vin number of the car did not match Vin number of ABS Module and even BMW cannot cancel these lights .. could this fact have any bearing on the starting problem ?

It might be an EECU issue as it's obviously getting fuel to the combustion chambers. Also, it's not displaying any codes which indicate that the EECU isn't registering that it's not working properly (possibly intermittent). First unplug the negative terminal from your battery. Next unplug and re-plug the EECU cable. This works approximately 50% of the time as it resurfaces the connector mating surfaces and on some models allows the EECU to reset. If this doesn't work, try a used low mileage one.
Highly doubtful your ABS module is causing your starting problems unless the problems occurred right after you replaced it.
Also, I suggest you need to find a competent independent local shop that specializes in BMWs. They will have the sophisticated tools necessary to diagnose your issues and turn off your trouble lights as well.

SOURCE: BMW X5 2000 problem

There can be many causes for the car not starting. Generally it is usually a fuel or a distribution problem. Many fuel problems of this kind are related to electronic injection and ECU. This kind of troubles often need special equipment, and can be fixed only at a well equipped garage, where they can test fuel flow pressure and volume in monitoring ECU feedback at the same time.
Simple things you can do are
Checking and eventually replacing fuel filter.
Checking and eventually replacing air filter.
Check that there is no oil on top of new spark plugs.
In last case try to listen if car is running on three cylinders, this can leave uncombusted oil on cylinder, and mean there are troubles with distribution or camshaft.
It is useless replacing one of the sensors without testing them, and when a sensor is gone you usually get some additional light on your instrument panel. At a garage they will connect straight to the computer and get an error message in return, in case one of the sensors is bad.

Sounds like it has jumped timing, dont know which engine you have so could be chain or belt.

SOURCE: Distributor wont spark

check the fuseble link.
you can measure it, and make sure the contact are clean and secured.
the other thing is the check the ignition switch, make sure you have 12v going to the switch.
check thermo switch on top of the block.

2002 525i bmw fuel pump hear it when turning key to 2nd setting but it stops after about 2 to 3 seconds is this ok

That is normal until the engine starts. It builds up pressure and shuts off until the pressure drops at the injector when they start working when you crank the engine.

Bmw 320d e 90 wont start but it cranks

Hi Mushi, Your BMW is fitted with an anti theft system (EWS) which controls the common rail injection. I suggest having a diagnostic scan carried out and pin pointing any possible problem, which could also be related to a defective crank or cam shaft sensor. Regards John

It sounds like just a coincidence. I dont know what a GRR noise is supposed to mean. It either Cranks, No Crank, or it Cranks but does not Run. Just tow it to a qualified shop and find out what the problem is.

No crank

shorting to start motor will allow the motor to turn but the ignition system is still off.
try with key turned to ignition position.
suspect starter solenoid on starter motor.
suspect fuses maybe there is a fuse which has blown.
suspect ignition key switch maybe defective.

My bmw 318 model 318 does take long when to start cold

maybe the crank position sensor, long starts are usually due to the fact the computer doesn't know where the NO.1 cylinder is, so he fires at random and eventually he nails it, therefore the car starts.

The crank position sensor tells the computer where the NO.1 piston is at and he knows when to send the spark, but u should have a check engine light on in this case.
