SOURCE: transmission shifting into nuetral

Check your fluid level. If the fluid level gets low, the pump basically pumps the pan dry in which the trans. valve body has no fluid to direct to keep in engaged in gear. Check your fluid level while running at operating temp. in nuetral. If this checks out ok, the trans. clutches are worn out to the point of the trans. no longer has the ability to stay engaged.

Van wont start, loud, has a burning smell and the oil light is on

I'd feel best if you can find a reputable mec and have it looked at. There are a mess of things that can make loud noise. You could have anything from a bad berring to a blown engine. When your'e on the road remember go to someone who is reccomended or a national chain or dealer..

1988 Subaru Dl Transmission

Well lucky for you there is a lemon law. Bring the car in for the state inspection, Request for them to be thorough, explain that you just bought it. The past owner is responsible for the repairs. If not, get reimbursed. I'm not sure what trani fluid it takes but call the dealer for that. The noise from the front end, the grinding could be anything, check the wheel bearings, steering components, rust on rotors, backing plates, and related items. The trany noise could be nothing or it could be clutch pedal linkage, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, or clutch asembily. It would need to be inspected to see if anything applies.

  • you might have lost first gear. check transmission fluid to see how dirty it is if real dirty or may be low. sounds like transmission fluid was low and burnt first gear out.
