My 1992 Ford Ranger torque converter clutch is stuck on and I'm wondering, after reading Jeff Turcotte's advice, if I should just disconnect the clutch soleniod or really search for a replacement. My truck frequently stalls when stopped.

Your transmission should still work if the solenoid goes bad. It will just shift funny

Unless you live in a state that requires an emissions test, forget it. The factory fix is to replaced the converter and internal seals and bushings. These states machines will not let you run a test with the light on.

hello there
The problem is with the gear oil. To keep ahead of the rest BMW started what they call life time oil for their gear boxes, though that sounds great it doesn't really work in reality, they have now gone back to recommending a gear oil change every 60k miles.
In short you need to change your gear oil and soon, the oil in your gear box is no longer effective and will damage the gear box. You'll need about 5 litres for your car and costs around £15 a litre, expensive stuff!! I had the same problem with my 328i auto, the dealer was clueless and kept quoting the lifetime oil, I changed the oil and the problem has gone and it's so much smoother.
Hope this helps, please don't forget to rate me.

it's either the tcc solenoid inside the valve body not engaging or the converter itself is on it's way out probably due to bad seal.. change that also if you go the converter route..check also the ground to the solenoid and make sure it's getting enough voltage. make sure the fluid is up to date and flushed before all of the above. and remember after solenoid install car wont drive right for a few miles until computer picks up new solenoid or get new transmission installed

You have to be very careful with input shaft rings. They like to eat into the pump stater. Also always buy new vb don't buy rebuilt because they only work 2 out of 5 times. I know this for experience
