Hi Rick, Good afternoon.
My 2001 Rav4 engine does not run smoothly. I have it serviced but the problem persists. The trottle body and the injectors were cleaned, sparks plugs and gas filter changed, still no relief. What I noticed was that for the last three times or so is that there is soot on the plugs. I changed them and the behaviour of the emgine is ok for a day or two but after that it's back to square one. The mechanic said it may be gas quality problem, so I changed gas stations from which I purchase petrol and even used octane booster to treat the gas; still no relief. In recent times I noticed that the engine is not starting on the first turn of the key; it is now taking several turns sometimes. This morning it took about seven turns before it started. What could be the problem? Thanks for for your kind assistance.
Regards,
Alex
Ok, Lets start with the basics. Have you had the computer on your car checked? There are a number of sensors, and other problems that could be causing this. You need to change mechanics first of all, because number one any mechanic worth half his or hers weight will first put the car on the computer. It rules out most of the plossible problems. Now get the timing checked, the timing describes all of the problems you have just described ie plugs fowling and speratic engine problems, also get a can of mass air flow sensor cleaner, and use it.
My personal fealing is that its in your timing or computer, but it could be a sensor. Let me know how this goes.

Usually black soot on your spark plugs indicates a rich air/fuel mixture. This can sometimes be fixed up with some basic maintenance. This can involve also changing your spark plug wires. The other thing that you should check out is the fuel pressure. If the fiel pressure is too high then this can cause the ratio to be too high. You should also check your timing. On newer vehicles timing cannot be changed however if it is off then this could indicate a problem with the engine's computer. Another cause of black soot can be that your air filter is EXTREMELY dirty. Go ahead and check these things out and get back to me if they did not fix anything.

Thanks for ur response. I'll have the mechanic try thesolutions u offered. I don't think the problem is with a dirty air filter; that has been changed over the period of the problem.
Thanks again and I will provide u with an update asap.

Thanks, Tepfy. I'll let u know how things pan out.
