Steering wheel (turning) is very hard to turn at slow speeds

Steering wheel has gotten hard to turn at slow speeds (turning) but is normal at higher speeds. The car just started doing this and has 50,000 miles. Belts and PS fluid look good and there are no leaks. Dealer checked ps pump, box and tie rod ends (took these loose) and couldn't find a problem. However, whatever they did lessened the problem but did not eliminate it.

I need some clarification to this problem. One says steering column, other says PS pump. I have already replaced my rack an pinion unit since my hard steering was also binding up very bad. The binding effect is gone with the new rack and pinion but my steering is still very hard and no where near smooth and easy like it was before. The PS fluid is also new, it's been cleaned and replaced. What is still the problem?? Any way to validate the PS pump is bad?

I had the same problem on mine with over 90K miles. I had to have the steering wheel column replaced. It ran about $450 from my trusty local mechanic.

How did they determine it was the steering column?? We just replaced our rack and pinion ($500 with labor, thank you) and it still is not as free turning as it had been but the binding up while turning did go away.

What causes my 2-wheel drive ranger to vibrate hard when I turn the steering wheel at low speeds only, like pulling out of garage? also does it in reverse. makes a noise near the rear when it is vibra

i would say it is a solenoid or air in the power steering lines but you would have to put a obd2 scanner and see what it says.
if i remember correct bleeding is as simple as removing the power steering cap and turning steering all the way left hold for 5 seconds then right and hold but you will need to look at oil in reservoir and see if it is bubbling while turning and holding. you will need a helper and if it is do this for 5-10 minutes.

Where is the power steering pump 97 geo tracker

97 geo tracker is not equipped with power steering. they where made so light that they just have steering assist which doesn't require power steering fluid or anything else. you will notice that when vehicle is parked or at slow speeds steering wheel is hard to turn. this is perfectly normal its just not power steering.

Steering not straightening out at slow speed

Worn steering components which allow the steering wheels to travel too far either way,hop underneath and get a friend to move the steering while you have a look for movement between the components, or a power steering component like relief valve. Its a bit hard to know without seeing the vehicle, i suggest a steering and suspension specialist like pedders or similar. These guys can do a safety inspection only, if you want to do the work yourself. Cheers Timo.

Car vibrates at slow speed, veering to the right, steering wheel vibrates; vibration less at higher speeds; within last two weeks couple of times steering hard, revved up in neutral it comes back to easy...

check tyres for wear-wheel balance needed if visibly ok-have a wheel alignment after a tyre rotation-best even tyres to be put on fronts-they will carry out a safety check all suspension and steering before doing the wheel alignment

Flasher is screwed up

This sounds like a bad flasher unit. Simply by replacing this unit should fix this problem. Usually they are located on the top of the steering wheel beneath the trim. You have to disassemble the trim around the steering column.

VW touareg steering judder low speed left/right turn

Sounds like you have air in your steering system. I would start by looking for any leaks on your steering system like hose to fitting crimps, steering pump, etc. Check your steering fluid level to make sure it is full and also look for bubbles on the dip stick. If everything looks good, start the vehicle and turn the wheels all of the way to the left and then to the right. Do this while the vehicle is in park and repeat at least 5 times. This will work out any air in your steering system. If the problem persists then the power steering pump may need to be replaced.
