Bleed the air out of the fuel system . crack the injector nuts and turn over until fuel drips out .re-tension the injector nuts . Check that the stop solenoid is operational. Ensure that the battery is fully charged as the diesel has to spin fast during cranking . Ensure that the glo-plugs are working especially if the ambient temp is low.

1. Check if you are getting spark from the distributor cap, if no, go to #2.
2. Check if you are getting spark from the ignition coil, if no, go to #3. If yes, your distributor cap is worn out.
3. Check if you are getting voltage to the coil, if no, it could be the ignition control unit that is faulty. If yes, your ignition coil is faulty.

First you need to see if the remote central locking is working. It sounds like your transponder(key) is un synchronized. Even if the central locking is working there is a d.a.s.(driver authorization problem). Try your other key if you have one. There is a way to resynch the key w/o a factory scan tool but you have to follow the directions exactly and be quick. Point key at door receptor.( grab handle area) Hold the lock button down and press the unlock button 5 times in 10 seconds while holding down the lock button. hold the lock button down the entire 10 seconds even if you've hit the button 5 times. after the 10 seconds is up release and hit the lock button again. The d.a.s. system shuts off your fuel pump when their is an authorization error. It is a common problem in 98 and 99 ml's. Your owner's manual tells you how to resynch the key if my description is difficult to follow. Hopefully I have been helpful

check your gas cap it might not be venting the tank properly remove gas can and see if that helps
SOURCE: 2001 mercedes cl500 wont start...cranks but wont
Open the air cleaner or intake hose and while someone is turning it over spray some ether into it with no more than three second bursts. If it cranks then you have a problem with fuel delivery and if it doesnt you are looking at something with the spark or ignition.
if a mercedes
Check the Fuel Pump Relay. behind the battery next to the OVP Over Voltage Protection Relay. They do fail. Occasionally the engine will not start when hot. This becomes more frequent until you are left stranded. If you are comfortable with jumping two terminals you can jump terminals 7 & 8 test the relay. if the car starts your Fuel pump relay is bad.
